In this position, Dr. Schweitzer was responsible for providing scientific and technological policy advice and analysis for Al Gore, President Clinton, and President Clinton's Science Advisor, and for coordinating the U.S. government's international science and technology cooperative initiatives. Dr. Schweitzer’s work has been fueled by his desire to introduce a stronger set of ethics into American efforts to improve the human condition worldwide.

Dr. Schweitzer earned his PhD from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego.

Dr. Jeff Schweitzer is a marine biologist, consultant and internationally recognized authority in ethics, conservation and development. He is the author of five books including Calorie Wars: Fat, Fact and Fiction (July 2011), and A New Moral Code (2010). Dr. Schweitzer has spoken at numerous international conferences in Asia, Russia, Europe and the United States.

Dr. Schweitzer's work is based on his desire to introduce a stronger set of ethics into American efforts to improve the human condition worldwide. He has been instrumental in designing programs that demonstrate how third world development and protecting our resources are compatible goals. His vision is to inspire a framework that ensures that humans can grow and prosper indefinitely in a healthy environment.

Formerly, Dr. Schweitzer served as an Assistant Director for International Affairs in the Office of Science and Technology Policy under former President Clinton. Prior to that, Dr. Schweitzer served as the Chief Environmental Officer at the State Department's Agency for International Development. In that role, he founded the multi-agency International Cooperative Biodiversity Group Program, a U.S. Government that promoted conservation through rational economic use of natural resources.

Dr. Schweitzer began his scientific career in the field of marine biology. He earned his Ph.D. from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego. He expanded his research at the Center for Learning and Memory at the University of California, Irvine. While at U.C. Irvine he was awarded the Science, Engineering and Diplomacy Fellowship from the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Dr. Schweitzer is a pilot and he founded and edited the Malibu Mirage, an aviation magazine dedicated to pilots flying these single-engine airplanes. He and his wife Sally are avid SCUBA divers and they travel widely to see new wildlife, never far from their roots as marine scientists.

Schweitzer and Deutsch show a genuine respect for their reader's time and the importance of their message by compressing this important work into such a short, interesting read. I've pored over a number of health books which start out with a bang, but fizzle with the improbability of implementing their conclusions. If the meaning of life were revealed in one, I'd forget what it was 300 pages later.

Optimal health deals with our most basic decisions about consumption and activity. For any behavior to change, there must be an easy message to remember, believe to be true and can take daily action on through our busy lives. This book hits all the marks. By building a simple case with clear science and omitting the unnecessary, this book's refreshing point is made from the early pages and reinforced throughout. We can stop kidding ourselves, save our money and use the simple message of Calorie Wars as a mantra. It helps us do what we probably already knew we could, yet eases the way with quiet facts that keep the message front and center on a daily, actionable basis while melting away the noise, hype and quackery that lead to so much failure.

Invest $4 in yourself and sell your shares in the supplement and advertising industries. Calorie Wars's actionable message renders their products and messages meaningless. And yes, I've already lost a few pounds since reading it.

A great read, even if you're not trying to lose weight. The book is intentionally streamlined without any of the typical boring filler most authors feel compelled to add. It concisely gives you the information you need to know to lose weight and keep it off. Or, not pack on the pounds to begin with. You also get some great web links, that you can access directly from your Kindle, to help you accomplish your goals.

This book really gets down to the important facts and treats the reader like an intelligent individual!! The science behind various myths and practices surrounding weight loss is revealed with great clarity. The concepts are presented in a cogent manner - quite understandable for the lay person. I also found the concepts covered easy to apply. The authors definately raised my awareness of what will actually work in an honest, straightforward manner, without the hype! I would highly recommend this resource to folks who are serious about being healthy and staying in shape!

I have read many diet books over the years, especially all of the big trendy ones (4-Hour Body, Atkins, Zone, Carb Addiction, China Study, etc.). There is so much contradiction out there-- cut out this type of food entirely, no, actually, the opposite-- no, it's about when you eat them-- no, it's the combination of foods you eat... and so on. I have some serious food info fatigue. This book gets right back to basics and makes it all simple again. It feels good to have clear direction and let go of some of the myths.

The subtitle of this brief tome might just as easily been "It Ain't Rocket Science". As the authors make clear, a calorie is a measure of energy, and a calorie is a calorie regardless of what fuel is burned (iceberg lettuce or ice cream). Given your height and gender, your body needs a certain number of calories for basic housekeeping chores (metabolic functions) and additional ones for the demands of the musculo-skeletal system. If the input of calories is less than those requirements, the body recruits stored fat (and ultimately muscle tissue) to make up the deficit, and you lose weight. If there your caloric intake exceeds the body's current demands, the body will store the excess as fat for later conversion into energy when and if needed, and you'll gain weight. Balance the caloric input with the caloric needs and you will neither gain nor lose weight. Mystery solved, without the intervention of the multi-billion dollar Diet Industry.

Clearly, physical activity - the one way to increase the body's need for additional caloric input - has secondary benefits for good health (aerobic capacity, greater ratio of muscle/fat, etc.) and the authors recommend it - entered into slowly and moderately, then increased as the body is able. They counsel that results come slowly but at an increasing rate as the body is able to undertake increasing physical demands. Likewise, the choice of foods you eat can have various health benefits, and the authors recommended fresh fruit and vegetables, certain fish, meat and nuts - as opposed to various processed foods - for their benefits from fiber and mono and poly unsaturated fats. But this is all about arterial and colon health. From the weight gain perspective, 1 calorie of brocoli is the same as 1 calorie from red meat.

The authors have done an excellent job of placing the knowledge and responsibility for weight management right where it belongs - on the individual! It is simple, as they exemplify and back with scientific insight. The more you take in, and the less you do to use it up, the more you will gain weight. If you burn what you take in (eat) you will maintain weight. If you burn more than you eat, you will lose weight.

Beyond those simple facts, the authors de-bunk much of the hype surrounding the various diet programs that are marketed as miracle solutions to the unsuspecting or uninformed public. The authors do recognize the value of understanding more about the secondary effects of what you eat (why vegetables might be better calories to ingest versus ice cream) and how balance in your diet similar to the balanced needs of your metabolism can be beneficial. But the essence of their book is helping you understand how to qualify and implement weight management (versus weight loss) as an ongoing lifestyle, not an event.

Very readable, very useful, very memorable.
