5.0 out of 5 stars Using for carbs and fats related to Diabetes
The CalorieKing Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter 2009
This is a really great book. I use it to keep track of mostly carbs for my Diabetes.
I have both the regular sized one which I carry with me when I travel and the large print one that I use at home. I find some books hard to find things in but but this book is easy to use. I have lots of other carb...

3.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book if You Eat Out
I'm one of the few people in the world who don't eat out a lot. However, this book is a fantastic book if you do. It's got calorie, fats and carb counts for many many things including a section dedicated to fast food. I'm wishing I hadn't purchased this book and had gone with Corinne T. Netzer's "The Complete Book of Food Counts". This little book is a little over 300...

I have both the regular sized one which I carry with me when I travel and the large print one that I use at home. I find some books hard to find things in but but this book is easy to use. I have lots of other carb counting books that I have purchased over the years but this is the one I turn to most. It also is printed on really good quality paper, which is a consideration when you will be leafing through it constantly. I discovered this book by accident a few years back and have been a fan ever since.

I'm going to update.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much and yet not enough..., October 8, 2011

This review is from: The CalorieKing Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter 2010 (Paperback)
This book has the same problem as many other calorie counting book. They all seems to assume that everybody only eats canned foods and fast foods. It is impossible to find information on simple basic fresh foods, the ingredients, if you will, in cooking!
One has to go through the pages and pages of fast food restaurants, frozen and packaged food to find calorie content for fresh vegetables.
I don't understand the principle behind it. Every can, jar and package has a label with nutritional information. Why do we need a book for that?!
Until I find a book that gives calories only for fresh foods or, at least, place them in separate chapter, I give up on buying so called calorie counters!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Diabetic's Must Have!, June 28, 2011

This little book is the most helpful of anything I have seen for looking at carbohydrates in foods. It includes just about every food you want to look up, along with many franchise restaurants. Great for dieting!

I find this calorie and carb counter the easiest to use. I have tried many, but I am happy that I finally found this one. As a diabetic, I find this easy to carry in my purse and to look up what I need to know quickly.

After my Dr. told me I had to start counting my carbs, she suggested I buy this book to help. I did and it is awesome! I can find anything I want in this book. Even all the local eating sites. It counts more than carbs. Calories and fat from anywhere. Even foods you make at home.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Entirely Accurate, September 25, 2011
This book was given to us by my child's hospital after he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. It is important for type 1 diabetics to count all carbs consumed because enough insulin must be given to cover the amount of carbs eaten.

We use this only for the section which provides the carb counts for franchise restaurant foods. If we happen to be at the mall or out-and-about, because of this book I have the information needed to allow him to choose something from any restaurant chain.

However, I don't find the sections detailing carb counts for general food items helpful. I will give you an example from the book. White rice varies in carb count by brand. Period. The book specifies rice as being either parboiled, sticky, short/medium grain, or long grain. The book says "parboiled rice - 22g of carbs per ½-cup cooked", which is erroneous unless you are using the brand they used. I checked my food labels at home. A more appropriate and helpful guide is, "Uncle Bens parboiled rice - 37g carbs/cooked cup," and "Mahatma Basmati Rice - 48g carbs/cooked cup."

I also don't like the sections on international cuisines, fair food, cafeteria food, etc. How on earth can it be responsibly asserted that one piece of cafeteria lasagna has 25 carbs and 275 calories? How big is a piece? Not all cafeterias use the same ingredients, and not all cafeteria staff give the same portions. How can this book assert that all cholent has 48g of carbs per cup? How can they assert that Lebanese cuisine is the same as all Middle Eastern food? The "cabbage rolls" they are talking about in this section are made differently in Lebanon than they are in Syria or Palestine. The "pilaf" has different ingredients depending on which family has made it, and it varies even more widely by country. The Kosher section is completely wrong too. It just depends. I don't like these gimmicky additions to the book, because they're wrong. I would rather just have a well-organized, accurate, comprehensive list of grocery foods itemized by brand.

This book is helpful, but not as helpful as I would have liked as a mother to a child who is type 1 diabetic and is dependent on precise carb counts. I use only the restaurant section, which I trust to be accurate because all franchises prepare food the same way and it won't vary that much.

Bought this book a month ago to try and lose some weight. I have found it an excellent help and guide and have found everything I have tried to look up. It seems very complete and I would recommend it to anyone seriously trying to count the calories in their diet.
