5.0 out of 5 stars Great for big apples, applesauce

When coring multiple apples for applesauce, this item is a godsend because I can push the cores out easily and quickly with the plunger. I then quarter the apples and drop them in my food processor chute for slicing. It really speeds the process. One type of apple I like eating plain is quite large and doesn't fit in even the biggest divider/corer unit, so again, if I'm dividing it to eat in sections, this is the corer I prefer.

I have a corer without a plunger, but this one tops that by a mile. If I miss the exact center of the apple in my first pass, I can easily recore starting at the bottom. Because it's so much faster to use (no time spent extracting the core from the hoop at the bottom of the unit) I'm encouraged to also try drying apples this year.

By the way, I bought some Vitamin C powder at the health food store, mixed a little with water in a spray bottle and use it to spray my cut sections of apple, which keeps them from browning whether I'm serving raw slices or drying them. Works great and lasts a long time without affecting the taste like lemon juice does. The solution can be stored in the fridge so it's handy when needed.

I'm adding this corer to my list of essential kitchen devices, and we're all eating more apples.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent design, April 8, 2009

I've owned several apple corers over the years, but this one is the best yet. It cuts cleanly, and the plunger neatly pops out the core, so you don't have to use your thumb. A simple, elegant, highly functional design... better than Oxo's "Good Grips" apple corer, and that's saying something!

I love eating apples but rarely do because I hate the mess of eating an apple without it cored and sliced. With this tool I can core my apple and slice it within seconds. I prefer this to the wagon-wheel looking tool because its sharper and cuts clean through. Its also easy to clean and tote in my lunch bag.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very smart kitchen gadget, March 1, 2010

This review is from: Calphalon Apple Corer with Plunger (Kitchen)
I had been using the same apple corer for about 30 years. It was a 2 piece design with a separate wooden plunger that I got in Switzerland and I loved it. I was dismayed that I could never find one just like it in order to replace it and recently I had to replace it because old faithful just wouldn't work anymore. So I thought I'd give the Calphalon Apple Corer with Plunger a try. Hooray for Calphalon because this smart little gadget works much better than my old Swiss one! It's funny about these kind of things ~ you just don't know that there's a better mouse trap out there until you try a new one!

What I love about this design is first of all there is no pinching ~ I always pinched the palm of my hand between the 2 pieces of my old corer. That could get nasty if I had a lot of apples to core. Secondly, the plunger is so easy to use! No struggles with this baby. Thirdly, the corer is nice and sharp. Again no struggles.

So I am really thrilled with my new Calphalon Apple Corer with Plunger. I core a lot of apples so I can dehydrate apple rings for a nice nutritious healthy snack. This corer is really perfect for the task and makes my prep work so much easier ~ a real blessing for my particular disability. I'm so glad my Amazon search yielded such an excellent result. I couldn't be happier with this very smart kitchen gadget!

5.0 out of 5 stars this works really well, October 1, 2009

This works really well. It seems sturdy and well made. The "core ejector" works well too. A welcome addition to my top quality kitchen arsenal. I just have to get better at aiming through the core every time on asymmetrical apples. Make sure you don't injure yourself by holding the apple wrong.

I had been using one of those OXO corers that cores and divides the apple into 6 pieces. It was sometimes difficult to push in down into the apple to remove the core, and then it had to be pulled out of the corer, most of the time piece by piece and a pain to do.

This great little corer, has an eject plunger and the core comes right out of it. Yes, sometimes depending on the apple, you still have to push or bang it down into the apple, but the easy core removal makes up for that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good corer, February 10, 2010

This review is from: Calphalon Apple Corer with Plunger (Kitchen)
This is a good corer and it works fast. It doesn't always get everything so some adjusting is needed, but I get large Granny Smith apples. It is a family favorite because of the "plunger" it has and you don't have to get your hands too sticky. The edge allows it to quickly get through the skin and out with little problems. I wish I had this when my boys were younger it would have made apples much nicer for all.

Works like a charm. It is sturdy and cores apples in a snap. I love the fact that the plunger removes the center with ease. Well worth the price.
