Essential pans for every kitchen...,
By
This review is from: Calphalon Commercial Nonstick 8- and 10-Inch Omelet Pans, Limited Edition Set (Kitchen)
These are the best nonstick pan in the world, and here's why:1) The nonstick surface is superior to anything else you will ever use, and it's guaranteed forever. The Commercial line has the far better LRS3 nonstick material than the less expensive LRS material in the Calphalon Professional Nonstick II line. I have had both for several years and I can not recommend the Professional line because the surface becomes sticky over time, while the Commercial Nonstick surface is nearly as slippery as the day I bought it. 2) The handle stays cool. 3) The pan is stunningly gorgeous, with its matte black anodized aluminum underside and its polished chrome handle. 4) You can even finish items in the oven at 350 degrees or so without damaging the nonstick surface... 5) The weight and balance of the pan are excellent; extremely sturdy yet not unwieldy. One caveat: You can not put Calphalon products in the dishwasher. It will cause discolorations and pits, and void the warranty to boot! But that is not a big deal because the superior nonstick surface is a breeze to clean. Enjoy!

What a great buy for two fry pans by Caphalon. They are getting daily use, as is the 10" crepe which was bought just because the price was so good. Take my advice, take your time and check Amazon.com, or others periodically (I must admit routinely I have found best prices on Amazon.com) for "special prices" on Calphalon. I just bought the 6.5 qt saucepot w/lid for $40. The Calphalon COMMERCIAL NONSTICK line is terrific, you can feel the quality. and as far as cleanup, you almost have to wash them. You can accumulate just the specific items you wish for much better than "set" prices if you're patient. I now own 17 pcs(of my choosing) mostly COMM NONSTICK, a few TRI PLY STAINLESS, each piece bought over the last 6 months when on sale for a total cost of under $300. Just slighty more than the T-FAL set I bought 3 yrs ago that is going in the trash because the non-stick is virtually non-existent.

The Calphalon Omelet pans and skillets are essential for the busy chef. To get both the 8" and 10" for under $50 is a fantastic deal! The 8" is my ideal 2-egg omelet pan. The small size keeps the eggs fluffy, and no-spatula flips are easy (and quite impressive). You can keep the heat nice and high - I've never had one burn on me yet. The 10" is great for fritattas and Denver omelets. The non-stick surface is a godsend when cooking eggs and breaded meats, and it really does clean up easily. Neither pan will last forever, particularly if you use them as frequently as I do (or if you occasionally poke them with a metal spatula). But for this value, you can't go wrong. There are surely more expensive non-stick pans out there, but for the price, these'll absolutely get the job done.

Let's face it -- when it comes to cookware, you're either going to pay very little or pay a lot, and the quality of the cookware will definitely reflect the choice you make. But with these two pans, you get the best of both worlds -- quality from a high-end name at a Wal-Mart price.
Simply put, these two pans will make your everyday cooking life much easier. The 8-inch pan is great for the smaller items -- eggs, sauces, even deep frying tortillas for enchilladas! The 10-inch pan works well for most medium jobs, from sauteing leeks and chantrelles to your children's grilled cheese. Both pans are very well designed, well balanced and not nearly as heavy as one might expect. I especially like the redesigned handles, which replace the earlier, much less attractive version. The non-stick surface is gorgeous and if you take care of it, it will take care of you. For those of you counting calories, you do not have to add any butter, oil, or similar fat to cook a lot of things in these pans (scrambled eggs being a prime example). Cleanup is a snap and I have never had any problems. The outer, adonzied finish gives it that signature Calphalon look. Best of all, these babies can be put right into the oven to finish things off or even to sear. I own various pieces from the various Calphalon lines, and I can tell you from personal experience that these pans perform as well as my others, and for a heck of a lot less money. For the price, these two can't be beat. You will use these pans every day, and you'll be glad everytime you reach for one.

a good value, but made in China,

Just got the pans last week. The pans are sturdy and heavy -- what I would expect from Calphalon. I used the 8-in to scramble eggs with no oil. No sticking occurred, and clean-up was a cinch. Perhaps the previous reviewer was talking about the regular commercial H/A, not the comm nonstick? I have several comm H/A pieces that are NOT nonstick, and when cooking eggs on those, the temp and timing do seem to have to be just right to avoid the sticking and scrubbing. One disappointment - the pans I received are made in China, not Ohio (btw, I am chinese). I did not see country of origin mentioned anywhere on Amazon's item description before making my purchase, only on the packaging after the pans arrived. The 8- and 10-inch pans sold individually (and more expensively) are made in the USA, but this "limited edition" set is not. Only time will tell how well they hold up, although there is a lifetime warranty. For now, I'm happy with my purchase, especially for thirty bucks total for the set of two.

I paid $29.99 for the set and thought I was getting a good deal with the listing price of more than $100 on Amazon until I received the package. It is listed as $29.99 on the package. So don't pay more than that.

Only two small flaws.....,

I received these pans yesterday and used them today. I set the 8" omelet pan on my ceramic cooktop and noticed immediately that it didn't sit flat--the handle is heavier than the body! The body of the pan was raised up only a little, so thought maybe when there is food in it, it would sit flat. I placed a medium sized sausage patty in it, after heating the recommended 2 minutes, and it still didn't sit quite flat, so I squeezed in another, smaller, patty and finally it sat flat. The pan cooked and browned the sausage patties great with no stick. The 10" omelet pan did not have the balance problem the 8" had (bigger body size). I cooked 5 bacon slices in it with no stick. I washed it and cooked wholewheat pancakes with unpeeled apples and wheat germ with absolutely no oils and no stick! I recently dumped a so-called "nonstick" electric griddle because it wasn't really nonstick and over time even stuck with an oiled surface.
Besides the 8" omelet pan balance problem, the other flaw is the rivets. They will accumulate brownish gunk over time, so pay special attention to these when washing. It would have been a great improvement if they had created them with welded handles. Another tip: never use spray oil products like Pam. They will build brown gunk over time even on nonstick surfaces. If you have to use an oil, use unsalted butter, liquid oil (you can buy a spray pump for liquid oils to spray on like Pam) or solid shortening. I bought these pans after months of cookware research. I originally wanted to buy the Sitram Cybernox fry pans, but after reading the reviews on their lack of nonstick capabilities when cooking eggs, opted for the Calphalon Commercial Nonstick fry pan/omelet line instead for just one reason: No other professional or commercial nonstick line offers a lifetime warranty (even the Sitram Nonstick and Demeyere Nonstick lines have only a 10 year warranty) and believe me I am tired of buying "nonstick" sets that wear out quick! I still intend to buy the Sitram Cybernox line, but not for egg cooking. After I have had the opportunity to use the Calphalon Commercial Nonstick line more and the Sitram Cybernox line, I will write another review. If you can afford the Demeyere line, it is reportedley the top of the cookware chain and the prices definitely reflect this. By the way--I bought these pans as a Limited Edition set from a well-known, coast-to-coast chain department store with an internet site that advertised them as being "on sale" for $39.99 (free shipping). When they arrived 4 days later in their manufacturer's cardboard, the price printed on it was indeed $39.99. The chain department store had misrepresented the product as being "on sale" when it wasn't really--it was just a "special offer".

i bought this for the ocasional egg and potato gratin'. and the good price.but, after a late night in the city, my husband decided to heat up some left-overs. i was in bed and he fell asleep on the couch! (and he took the battery out of the smoke detector, without my knowledge while i was out of town) so the left overs burnt to ashes. and the pans were only one week old! not so good for a pan but after a good soaking it is just like new. the smoke detectors are all up and running. and i was about to order another set of pans but it is as good as new! advise..check your smoke detectors... but these pans will not harm themselves or you .scary how good they hold up.

Wonderful. Just one drawback,

This review is from: Calphalon Commercial Nonstick 8- and 10-Inch Omelet Pans, Limited Edition Set (Kitchen)
I love these pans overall. I have been using them over 6 months and non-stick coating did not wear out so far. (Make sure you use either wood or plastic utensils or else no pan will survive.) Food taste so much better. Clean up is a breeze when you just wipe them with paper towel when hot. The only drawback I found was that when the rivets(or joints, inside the pans) get dirty it is not easy to clean them compared to the non-stick surface. It will be perfect if Calphalon could also make rivets non-stick so food won't stick to them. Except that, I am quite satisfied with the pans. :)

I mostly buy cookware a piece at a time. These omelet pans are the BEST to cook with and the BEST value that has been offered in a while.A great starter gift if you have older children living on their own (who appreciate good cookware!) Then for each occasion I suggest buying another piece to add the their collection.(I have 5 grown children who all love to cook) It is a marvel to clean and dry. YES YES YES buy these and make and flip wonderful omelets! |
