Calphalon Commercial Nonstick 5-Quart Saucier, October 13, 2006
This review is from: Calphalon Commercial Nonstick 5-Quart Saucier (Kitchen)
I got this Calphalon 5-Quart saucier several months ago from Amazon at full price. I have been using Calphalon cookwares for the past 10 years. This is a great addition to my Calphalon collection. I have been noticing in recent years, Calphalon cookwares sold by Amazon come in a plain white generic box, which is disappointing, especially for gift giving, I enjoy the printed Calphalon retail box. To my surprise, this saucier comes in a nice multi-colored printed Calphalon retail box, just like the high quality Calphalon you got a few years ago. Currently, there is no image showing. The saucier comes with a sliver-tone lid, not the glass lid. It has two stainless loop handles. If you really want to know what the pot looks like, the saucier looks a lot like the Simply Calphalon Nonstick 5-Quart Chili Pot. The quality of the saucier is consistant with the high quality Calphalon commercial nonstick line of products. I have been using the dish washer for this pot for several months, so far I have not seen any issue with the coating. I love this saucier. The quality is much better than the Anolon 5-quart saucier. It makes a good gift too (with the beautiful box).

I end up reaching this pot all the time. I use it for everything from boiling pasta and simmering soups and stews to making pilaf and risotto. And at this price, you can afford two.
Unlike most Teflon pans, this can be heated to a high enough temperature to properly brown food while the heavy gage anodized aluminum also handles low temperature, slow cooking. I do use a pizza stone in my oven to regulate the temperature and that also helps with slow cooking.
It is not dishwasher safe, but its so easy to clean it hardly matters. Not even burnt caramel sticks to the interior and regular dish soap is fine for the exterior.
I do recommend you invest in nonstick safe utensils. There is silicone and nylon tools, which are nice but can b e a bit pricey. However, wood or bamboo are just fine, very inexpensive, and can last for decades.

very versatile piece of cookware, February 5, 2007

COOKS ILLUSTRATED ran an article a couple of years ago that claimed that with most home kitchens, a frying pan or skillet was better at stir fry dishes than a wok. Be that as it may, i find that this CALPHALON saucier works better than the skillet for stir frying. i find that the anodized aluminum heats up quickly and high sides of the saucier keep the ingredients from flying all over the stovetop from vigorous stirring. it is great at carmelizing ingredients before making them into a soup. it is also the perfect size for oven braising a whole 7 bone chuck roast or whole pork loin roast. So whether it is stir frying a quick chinese meal, simmering a vegetable soup, slow cooking a pot of chili, making enough spaghetti sauce for weeks to come, or preparing a pot roast, this one pot can do it all, and in great style ... and the non-stick is a snap to clean!
