An excellent Pasta Pot,
By
This review is from: Calphalon Complements Stainless-Steel 3-Piece 12-Quart Multipot Set (Kitchen)
This pot is excellent for cooking pasta in. I have had this pot for a few weeks now using an electric stove - it works very well and cleans very easily. It is a very large pot so make sure you have a big kitchen - I was alarmed at first sight thinking the water would take ages to boil because of the size- but the calphalon quality really makes everything in my kitchen go quite well. I cook lasagna's very often and this pot can handle plenty of noodles - in my old pot i could only handle about 10 noodles for one lasagna - but this thing can do almost triple my old pot. A worthwhile investment.

I ran across this pot when it was part of the Friday sale and figured it was a bargain for the price. Shipping was rapid - I ordered it on a Friday using the super saver option and received it the next Tuesday (it was shipped out the same day). This is a sturdy, attractive ahd huge pot that should hold plenty of pasta or whatever else you want to put into it. Previously I had been using a much smaller pot to cook pasta and it was very frustrating trying to fit it in and also let it cook properly. With this high quality Calphalon, that will no longer be a problem. This is really nice. The only negative comment I have is that I am dubious about the retail of this being $160 like it says in the listing - my box says it is a "gift" so I suspect it was originally intended to be a bonus or premium for ordering a large set of other Calphalon cookware. Still, it is definitely worth the price I paid and more.

I gave it 5 stars because of the price I paid for it - at $29.99 it's definitely a 5 star pot... So catch it on sale, if you can...
I like that the pasta insert can double as a LARGE steamer - there is room below it for enough water to do the job. I can even envision a stovetop clambake - though I have no access to fresh seafood, I'm ready, just in case! It will definitely get a work out during the upcoming tomato and peach season, not to mention boiling and straining the venison bones this fall. All in all, I'm very pleased! ;0)) PK

Poor Design,

I was disappointed in this multi-pot set. I bought it primarily for cooking pasta, but because the strainer/colander doesn't fit far enough down into the pot, you have to fill the pot to almost full to cover the noodles, much more water than you would ordinarily use, and therefore it takes longer to heat, once it did start boiling, the water spit out from under the colander and worst of all, I wanted to wash the pot right after cooking but I had a hard time carrying the 3 gallons of very hot water to the sink.
I don't have a big steamer and I think this pot might serve well for a crab boil or something like that. And it's very pretty. But disappointing for pasta.

This pot is just huge! It is perfect for boiling up corn on the cob to freeze for winter. You can get about 20 ears in this pot! It is worth the money if you cook up big batches of things. I would recommend it.

Decent Large Pot but Colander Isn't That Useful,

The best reason to get this pot is that it is large. It heats pretty evenly and it definitely holds a lot of water so you can cook a bunch at once: pasta, corn on the cob, chili, etc. I've had the pot for five years now and while it does get used regularly, it is too big for regular use. The lid doesn't fit quite as well as some other brands of pots I have, but that's not a huge issue as I usually just use it for boiling water. The colander (or pasta insert) isn't that useful as other reviewers have mentioned because it doesn't go to the bottom of the pot and spaghetti and other thin pastas have a tendency to fall through. I prefer to just boil pasta in the pot and then strain it normally with a colander in the sink.
After a few years of use, the pot still works well, but it has started to discolor inside. The nice, shiny metal has turned dull and looks like there is a layer of starch inside that will not come off with any sort of scrubbing. The insert has stayed shinier, but it is rarely used compared to the other pot. Another thing I don't like about the pot are the handle on the lid which really needs a hot pad to open. Overall, I like the pot and do use it regularly and I would probably recommend it to people who semi-regularly need a large pot for cooking. It's not perfect, but it works. If I had to buy it all over again I would not worry about the insert and just find a good 12-qt pot.

Horrible design,

I never use this pot. The pasta insert sits far too high inside the pot. Thus I have to use several quarts more water than is necessary. Not crazy about having twice as much scalding water than required sitting around. The quality of the pot is good; just extremely poor design.

For $30 you can't beat the value. I had to give the item a 3 because of the design, when boiling pasta with the insert in place water boils over and gets everywhere, even with the heat turned down enough to maintain a slight boil water comes out in copious amounts. Both the pan and insert are of superior quality and a similar set would be in excess of $100 anywhere else.
