I own many knives including several Wusthof's but I must admit that this one has been the true workhorse of my kitchen. Its a heavy but very versatile knife that possess amazing sharpness and balance that comes in very useful for just about any task from cutting up whole poultry to chopping up vegetables. I highly recommend it especially at this price.

This is a handsome knife with its heft and the full-tang full-forged stainless steel body, a great knife in the kitchen and value for the money. I have had this for over 2 years now (gift from my daughter). It has become my knife-workhorse in the kitchen because of its convenient weight, its size; that it is well-balanced and keeps its sharpness.

I've been getting into cooking and was in the market for something better than the super cheap lightweight knives I've used my whole life, and decided before shelling out triple digits for a high end Shun or something, to take it in baby steps and try a mid range knife like this and see how it goes from there.

This is a GREAT knife for me to use around the kitchen. It glides through raw meats and vegetables alike; cleanly and effortlessly. It's got a good heft and feels very solid and reliable but is also well balanced. I'm still very careful and methodical with slicing and chopping, but this knife (plus the 5" and 7" Calphalon Santoku set) have taken the chore and effort out of it and made it a real breeze. At this point, I don't forsee a need to upgrade to the high end; these knives seem VERY well made.

You could not get a better chef's knife for the price. Unbelievable. I have had mine for 6 years and never had to have it sharpened professionally. I keep it very sharp with a steel.
I would never buy any other knife now. I use to only buy Henkels. I must have had at least 6 Henkels throughout the years at about $100 bucks per knife. The Calphalon is way easier to keep sharp....and I like the weight better too. I guess there is more carbon in the steel. At any rate....the price is right and I actually love the knife more than any I have used before

If you're reading this review, either you cook alot or are buying for someone who does.

I started with the Calphalon Santoku which is an excellent knife but more suited for certain styles of slicing/cutting (think widely applicable for prepping Asian cuisine whereas the Chef knife is in line with American/European) leading me to this knife. Steel is fairly good quality and holds its edge well. It is well-balanced for high speed chopping with a full-tang in the handle. The grip on the handle is ergonomic for slicing/chopping, however it may not have enough "grip" on the surface if you want more heavy duty chopping (in which case you should be using a different knife).

Overall, the Calphalon is a quality, no-frills chef knife that I have found to be the most versatile piece of cutlery in my kitchen set.

This blade comes sharp out of the box though as always I recommend that you give it a once over with a extra fine stone to get that next to perfect edge. Beyond that the knife is almost perfectly balanced though it is heavy in the handle (I prefer this to blade heavy) and the sweep on the knife is great. Its no oversized knife you find in a greasy spoon.

I have a small set of Calphalon Contemporary knives. This large chef's knife is my go-to for most jobs. I've had the set around ten years now and they're still just as good as the day I got them, aside from a small discolored area where one was left wet in the sink for days (oops). I hand wash them, dry and put them straight away after use. When they get worn down I just run them through the knife sharpener and we're back in business for many more hours of slicing and dicing fun. The handle is smooth and comfortable to grip for my large hands, but may be too large if you have small hands. I find them easy to work with for precise cuts or for cutting apart things like pumpkins or entire turkeys. Before getting this set I was a master of jagged, mashed apart vegetables and thought I had terrible knife skills, but it turns out I was just using inferior knives. I tried these out and my old serrated Farberware set went in the trash. These go through even soft things like ripe tomatoes with a clean cut and minimal pulverizing. A good quality tool makes the job so much easier! I also find these safer. Poor quality knives I've tried before slid off food, or cut with uneven pace and led to slipping which meant my fingers were in harm's way. These slide through food smoothly with predictable speed and direction, making it much less likely to accidentally slip. Even though I keep mine super sharp I've never cut myself with them, compared to at least weekly with Farberware.
