5.0 out of 5 stars Great potato masher and saves pan finish
I was a little hesitant about trying this masher because it is thicker than the metal one I had been using. I usually slide the masher under the potatoes as I mash to move the bottom to the top for mashing. I have been getting away from the metal tools to protect my new stainless cookware. So I decided to try this masher. I'm glad I did!! It works great and my old metal...

I have a girlfriend but when I'm in the kitchen, Calphalon is my paramour.

Which is why this masher saddens me. The other reviewers have it right, smooth design, sturdy construction, gets into tight spaces, and a strong tactile response. But those are things I look for in a hammer, not a potato masher.

The mashing end is HIGHLY inefficient: holes are too small, plastic supersedes the space available for pressing food through. And so much is stuck in those holes and on the underside of the masher once you're through. A plain wire masher won't scratch your nonstick pans (assuming you're acquainted with finesse), isn't a tenth as wasteful, and is MUCH more efficient.

Bottom Line:

I strongly suggest getting something else to fulfill your mashing needs.

I had doubts whether this would scratch my pans but it did not and mashed my potatoes just the way I like them.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for working in non-stick pans, April 21, 2010

I got this because I need to mash things in my non-stick pans. However, the holes in this masher are small and not much food gets through them. It is nice that the sides are curved up so that you can mash food near the edge of the pan. It works, but I think a redesign of the size of the holes would make it work much better.

This is the best masher that I have ever used! It is sturdy, comfortable to hold, and works great. I use it all the time to make banana bread.

It mashes potatoes, which is what it is supposed to do, and it's not broken, so... A+

I bought this masher to use for making apple sauce. I liked that it had larger holes to allow for a chunkier applesauce and that it was nylon for use on my coated pans. My only negative is that it can be hard to clean.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality, March 24, 2010

I'm very pleased with this purchase. The utensil works great and is a pleasure to use and to easily clean up. When you use this on potatoes, you don't have to use a lot of effort or time to get the potato completely mashed up with no lumps left at all. An excellent plus that really makes this potato masher unique is its rounded edges, which catch ALL the potato around the pan and don't left any unmashed up against the sides! There is only one negative whatsoever: I mash potatoes with the skins ON for the vitamins and fiber in the skin, and this masher doesn't get the skin pieces mashed small, but rather leaves a lot of medium-size pieces. I guess it just isn't good on mashing up the skin like it is the potato part. We call mashed potatoes with the skins on "smashed potatoes". As long as you just run this under tap water as soon as you have finished using it, all the food rinses easily out and can wait in the sink until after dinner when you do the dishes. Have never had any trouble with food sticking to potato mashers at all when I do this.

I was alittle concerned about this item because it is made of nylon (plastic). I was afraid it would not hold up to the punishment I would put this through for making fresh mashed potatoes. Suprise, I am very impressed, not only did it hold up to the pounding of making mashed potatoes with out flexing or bending, it cleaned up very easily. The grip anywhere handle is great.

No issues at all. Might be a little tough to clean but a brush does the job easy. The curve really lets you get into the corner of the pot and it really mashes nicely. Go for it. You won't be sad.
