Great roaster for the price, perfect family meals every time, October 22, 2004
This review is from: Calphalon Simply Calphalon Nonstick Hard Anodized Aluminum Roaster with Flat Rack (Kitchen)
We registered this item for our wedding last year (when this thing retailed at its full price). When one our friends got this for us, we were estatic! I've always had those flimsy roasters that rust and warp after a few uses...not anymore! This Simply Calphalon roaster is just the upgrade that we were looking for. And now that Amazon has it a discount, it's a BARGAIN.
We made our first big meal for Christmas when we cooked a 10-pound filet mignon roast. It came out perfect and clean up was a breeze. We have since used it several other times for roasting chicken. First of all, it is hard-anodized, which means that this heavy duty metal will distribute heat evenly when it cooks your roasts, turkeys, chickens, etc. Second, it is nonstick. Even after roasting for hours, the pan is easy to clean. Another nice feature is the flat rack. It doesn't squeeze your roast/chicken/turkey/etc into an unnatural v-shape and does not limit the size of your roast/chicken/turkey/etc to the size of the rack since it doesn't come in on the sides. It actually allows you to use the rack to it's full potential...especially helpful for larger turkeys and prime rib.
The nonstick coating on the rack is pretty thick and after several uses, it has not rubbed off, flaked, etc. Also, the pan itself does not scratch easily as I've used tongs and other utensils to get the meats out without scratching it. My roaster still looks like new. You won't be disappointed by this one!
P.S. As for Jim Kennicott's review on March 29, 2005, he must have gotten the wrong roaster because the roaster that I got fits in all regular ovens. I have a Jenn-Air JGR8775Q and it fits fine. I took it to my in-laws who has a basic Frigidaire oven and it fits fine as well.

This doesn't have an angled rack...other Calphalons better, November 27, 2004
This review is from: Calphalon Simply Calphalon Nonstick Hard Anodized Aluminum Roaster with Flat Rack (Kitchen)
This is a great deal on clearance, half the price of what I saw recently at Macy's. However, this particular model is missing two important features.
First of all, the rack sits flat in the bottom. Second, the rack has handles along the long edges. Meanwhile, the roaster handles are of course on the short sides. The four handles combine to "lock in" a fixed space -- you can't have bird that's legs hang over the pan for example. Newer roaster models I have seen that are optimized for turkeys and birds have a three angle "cradle" rack, which I think would be much more functional.
Overall, this is a great deal, and I'm sure it'll work well for pork and beef roasts, etc. And we did fit a 20lb turkey in the pan (in a bag) without the rack, so it's not all bad. But, it could be better. The nonstick is very nice, cleanup was a snap.

Why Did I Wait So Long To Buy This?, March 21, 2005
This review is from: Calphalon Simply Calphalon Nonstick Hard Anodized Aluminum Roaster with Flat Rack (Kitchen)
I like to cook which does includes roasting. I have several roasting pans that do not even come close to having the redeeming qualities this roaster has. The pan itself is not heavy and the large handles on the ends make it easy to move around when food items are placed in the pan. Clean up is sooo easy. I recently put the roaster to the test by steaming a 4 pound duck on the stove top for an hour, removing the duck, and wiping out the roaster. I then put the steamed duck back in the pan and placed it in an oven set at a high temperature for a total of 40 minutes. Crackling sounds could be heard, and grease was popping all over the oven (thank goodness it is a continuous cleaning one!) When finished, the duck looked brown and crispy and even looked like the one pictured in the recipe book. (If you want the exact recipe I will gladly share it with you...) The pan was another story. It was brown and crispy looking and a greasy mess to boot! After dinner I tackled the pan and it took only minutes to clean with virtually no scrubbing, just quick swipes with my normal dish cleansing cloth. Wow! Another Calphalon keeper!!
