Comfortable but not so durable,
By
This review is from: Calphalon Nylon 4-Piece Utensil Set (Kitchen)
We received a variety of these Calphalon nylon utensils as a gift about ten months ago. So far none of them have melted like "cheap" plastic utensils, but they have not proven to be very durable in other regards. I am looking to replace several of the pieces and won't be buying this "model" again for a couple of reasons:
First, the edges have "flaked". I am not sure how else to put it, they aren't exactly cracked but layers of the material have peeled away and this caused little bits of the utensil to break free and add unwanted "seasoning" to my dishes. Second, they DO bend pretty easily and the silicon surface peeled up at the stress point within weeks. It appears that the silicon section just isn't mounted well. Third, though they claim to be dishwasher safe, one pass through the washer left them with permanent light spots/stains- they look like bleach stains. Overall I am not completely dissatisfied, after all the ones that haven't begun "flaking" still do the job with mediocre performance. I don't feel like the purchase price of these would be a waste by any means, I have just used better and would recommend purchasing an alternative.

Fantastic Utensil Set,

I got this set to go with my new Calphalon Contemporary Non-Stick pans I bought on Amazon, to protect my investment. These utensils are very heavy duty, but they're made from Nylon so that they do not scratch the non-stick surfaces of your skillets and pots. I've gotten other nylon utensils in the past and they were flimsy. But these are really solid and sturdy and work excellent. The handles do not bend or flex under pressure.
I highly recommend these to anyone that has non-stick cookware. You will nt be disapointed!

Ruined On First Use,

I was very excited to get my new non-stick Calphalon cookware and 4 piece nylon utensil set. The first time I cooked with high heat on my Calphalon non-stick skillet the nylon Calphalon spatula melted. The front edged flaked or melted, whatever you want to call it. It's now peeling into my food. Also, the solid spoon now has a white-ish tint to the front portion of the spoon after using it in boiling water. I have never put any utensils in the dishwasher or used them in a way other than what the manufacture recommends. I am deeply disappointed in this set. I will take it back for a refund as soon as I can find a superior replacement.
Note: The box says silicone and nylon heat resistant to 500 and 400 degrees, respectively.

Hight Heat Resistant,

I had a cheap set from W@$%^*)t and I moved into a place with gas. When I had electric i would lean the utensils against the trying pan. I leaned the utensils against the frying pan against the gas stove and it melted all the way through. I got this set and it does not happen at all even on high gas. After removing them against the frying pan its slightly warm to the touch, but no melting at all.

Perfect for me!,

I had these on my wish list on Amazon.com and sometimes you can snag them on here for around $13-15 for the set (when you add to cart to see the price), but they've been at $19.95 for awhile so I went and used my $5 coupon and purchased this same set at Bed Bath & Beyond. The quality is good enough for me, as I am not an avid cooker. The silvery part of the handle (shows the Calphalon logo) is a rubberish material so that is good for gripping and not slipping out of your hand and into hot water or on the floor! I have Teflon coated pans and these will work just fine. Even at $19.99 it's still a good price b/c these utensils alone range from $7 and up.

Premium quality kitchen tool set,
By Nathan Beauchamp "ConsumerAdvocate" (Oak Park, IL USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 50 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Calphalon Nylon 4-Piece Utensil Set (Kitchen)
Calphalon is probably best known for their chef quality cooking pans (which I also own) but they're starting to make a name for themselves with their supporting cast of cooking tools as well. I've used a broad variety of kitchen utensils over the years from super cheap wood ones to high quality Good Grips. Of them, Calphalon are among the very best. The reason is simple: extremely high build quality. All of the Calphalon utensils are made of high density plastic with slightly softer plastic handles. They are a single piece of forged nylon which makes them extremely durable. I've been using a set for over a year non-stop and they still look new. Because they are nylon, they are hugely resistant to heat and will not easily melt or deform if accidentally left in a hot pot or pan. They also will not scratch your non-stick pots and pans (or even hard anodized pans if you have them). They also each have a small eyelet that will allow you to easily hang them if that's your thing.
I've never had a problem with the gray part of any of these utensils popping off. I've also never had any of the Nylon flake off or get stressed from repeated use. I use these tools literally everyday, but I suppose that it is possible that others have used them more strenuously than my family. From my experience, I'd say this is about the best set of kitchen tools that I've ever owned. If you prefer professional kitchen tools, these are for you. For a slightly higher price you get a much nicer tool that will last practically forever. As well made as Calphalon's pot/pan sets, they're premium quality utensils. Highly recommended.

Replaced all my kitchen utensils with these,
This review is from: Calphalon Nylon 4-Piece Utensil Set (Kitchen)
When I bought my first house several years ago, I bought a set of OXO kitchen utensils that were cheap. I didn't do much cooking, so I figured they would get me by. I used them for years, but when I got married, we got got a Calphalon Nylon spatula as a wedding gift. I have since replaced all my OXO utensils with Calphalon Nylon ones.
It's plastic, so you don't have to worry about it splitting or absorbing bacteria like a wooden one. They are well-constructed; you can scoop a heaping pile of mashed potatoes or sautè a heavy piece of meat without it bending much at all. The handle is fairly thick, so it fills the hand better than many others. The grey strip runs almost the entire length of the shaft and is slightly softer than the black body, so it offers a good grip. But the thing that made me switch everything over is its "unibody" construction. Other kitchen utensils have a shaft that tapers to the scoop which is attached to the handle with an adhesive. The problem is that, over time, the seal between the shaft and the handle can open up a bit, which lets in water whether you're using a dishwasher or washing by hand. The water can be annoying when unloading the dishwasher and, at worst, can become tepid while sitting in a drawer, dripping into your food when you take it out for use. There's nowhere for water to get stuck on these, so you don't have to worry about it. They have been used at very high temperatures on my stove top and sent through the dishwasher dozens of times and are no worse for the wear (whereas my old OXOs have many grooves in the shaft from sitting on the side of a pot for even a short time). You might pay a little more for these, but they are worry-free and will last as long as you want to use them. I actually got a Calphalon Essentials spatula at one point, but the Nylon line is quite a bit better. Currently, the most helpful review mentions flaking, easy bending, and the grey strips falling off. I don't know if he/she got an especially bad set or I got an especially good one, but I have been using these consistently for almost two years and have not experienced any of that. Pros - Plastic: more sanitary than wood and doesn't scratch non-stick cookware like metal - Sturdy construction with thick handle - Softer grey strips on handle give good grip - Nowhere for water to be accidentally stored - Very durable; used for two years with no significant signs of wear Cons - More expensive than many other spoons

More Made-in-China Junk,

After the first few uses of the spatula, the front edge burned and bubbled up. This was during normal use cooking an egg and the spatula was never left in the pan for more then a few seconds. Extremely poor quality. The other utensils have not had any problems YET. The spatula was the most important tool.

Doesn't live up to Calphalon name,
By Renee Courchesne (Hingham, MA United States) - See all my reviews

We received these utensils for a Christmas gift nearly two years ago. They do the job, and I like the silicone in the handle that allows you to rest the utensil in a pan or pot if necessary. For the last few months, however, they have started melting/ peeling at the edges- especially the spatula. Also, the pasta fork and the slotted spoon are a particular pain to clean. I won't buy these again, but I'll keep using them on my non-stick cookware until I decide what else to get.

Calphalon Utensils Set,

I purchased this Utensils Set based entirely on my use of the Calphalon Nylon All Purpose Turner, which I had purchased before buying this 4 pack. I'm pleased with my purchase, although in honesty I mainly use my Favorite Calphalon All Purpose Turner most of the time. Occasionally I'll cook Pancakes and the wider spatula within this set comes in quite useful.
The Price, (Hence the Rating of a 4 instead of a 5), is a bit High verses buying the equivalent Nylon Utensils from a 99 cent Store. But the quality, strength and feel of the utensil in your hand out-weighs the momentary shock at the register. I'm pleased with my purchase and it may appear that I am now on the road in becoming a "Calphalon-Snob". (In replacing all of my Cook-ware and utensils with Calphalon products.) I only have one Calphalon Unison Slide Nonstick 12-Inch Covered Omelette Pan thus far., but I find I use it a lot. |
