Fully forged from a single piece of German high-carbon stainless steel, this 6-inch utility knife is ideal for making sandwiches; slicing meats, vegetables, and large fruits; and peeling melons. The narrow blade is tapered from spine to edge and from heel to tip, with a bolster providing balance and safety. Additional balance and strength come from the full tang running through the handle, which is formed of hygienic, fiberglass-reinforced poly that won't crack, split, or chip and is attached to the tang with the traditional three rivets. The high-carbon stainless-steel blade takes and holds a fine edge and it won't rust, stain, or discolor. A quality knife like this should be hand washed. I bought this knife as part of the 15 piece set. As with all the knives in the set (see review), it is a wonderful example of the knife makers art. Everything from design to execution is on par with any knife produced in Germany. They just feel right in your hand. The steel is a great compromise between stain resistance, and edge keeping ability. A simple rinse and wipe keeps it looking new, yet a few strokes on a whetstone bring it to a razors edge. These are knives that you will be proud to own.

I'm not a chef nor much of a cook so I want and need just one all-purpose knife in the kitchen for most jobs. This knife is perfect. I love the feel, heft, and size. It's also WONDERFUL to have a sharp knife in the house!! This purchase has taught me that knives are one of those things where you truly get what you pay for. WORTH EVERY PENNY.

Recently, I picked up this knife on sale at a local store and was very pleased with the quality and value it affords. I have long been a fan of Calphalon cookware and my impression now is that this same quality extends to their cutlery line as well. The blade was pretty sharp right out of the package, and with just a bit of work it was very sharp. The size and heft of this knife are very comfortable in my hand, and I find myself selecting this one from the knife drawer whenever I have a kitchen task where a full sized chef's knife would be overkill. I highly recommend this purchase!
