4.0 out of 5 stars Works great, except for thumbs
As with all my reviews regarding kitchen gear, they are from two perspectives: mine (of course), and my spouse's. I'm just a regular kitchen schmo, but she is a professional chef who has attended culinary school.

We've had these oven mitts for about a year now, and we're both more-or-less pretty happy with them. I mostly just use them for when I bake cookies...

3.0 out of 5 stars Too Big!
This is an effective and high-quality oven mitt, but it's definitely not one-size fits all. I don't have small hands, and this is way too big for me. There's an inch or so of space at the top of the mitt, and it feels like my hand's swimming around in it. It makes it very hard to do any delicate gripping. My wife's hands are fairly small, and these don't work well at all...

I mostly just use them for when I bake cookies and pizzas, which I feel is pretty representative of your typical baking usage. When it comes to oven mitts, I have a low bar for satisfaction: do they fit and do they keep my hands cool? In this case, they do.

My spouse uses them quite a bit more extensively than I do; she bakes nearly every single day and uses them for handling a lot of cast-iron cookware. Her biggest complaint is that the shape and silicon coating makes it difficult to use them with a natural thumb motion. To clarify, it's easy to move your thumb into your hand (i.e. thumb touching the side of your index finger), but difficult to move your thumb across your palm (ie, thumb touching pinky). As such, it's not the best for stove-top usage (gripping handles) or for things like 9"x13"x2" pans where you need to get your thumb around the top for a good grip.

Still, they're perfectly serviceable and after a year of hard usage, they don't show any sign of fraying or having the silicone coating wearing off - which is more than you can say for your average inexpensive oven mitt.

Also, and this is entirely my fault for not reading more carefully, but it's worth reminding that this is only ONE mitt. I'd assumed it would be a pair.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real Winner, May 29, 2007
Love it...I first tried the Caphalon red pot holder...I just don't like these all silicone pieces...and this give you the best of both worlds...quality fabric that does not fade or shrink plus the durability and heat resistant caphalon... so I ordered another po holder and a mitt...true red and lovely in my red themed apple kitchen.

1.0 out of 5 stars Seam Split, Causing a Nasty Burn, December 22, 2008

A few months after this item was purchased, one of the seams split where the thumb meets the hand (the "vee"). I got a nasty burn because of this and cannot recommend this product. I suggest finding mitts that are seamless, or at least have seams in a less problematic place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love these mitts!!!, January 9, 2010

This review is from: Calphalon Twill Thumb Mitt (Kitchen)
I have owned a pair of these for five years and I cook a lot. They have held up perfectly. I'm here to buy a second set to match the new color of my kitchen, and will ONLY buy these. As for the mitt being too big, I have average size hands for a woman, and never really noticed if they are too big or not. You really don't need much dexterity reaching into an oven, so I don't see why it matters. They cover enough of my arm to make it comfortable for reaching into the oven. I have had several other mitts that have burned my hand through the mitt and decided to find a high quality mitt. These have never burned my hand. I stopped looking after these and five years later I am still very happy with my purchase!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Worthless, July 17, 2009

They don't do any better than the cheapest grocery store oven mitt. I can just get a casserole out of the oven and onto the top before my fingers are burned. There is no way I could walk 10 steps to the dining table without the heat going right through and burning me.

1.0 out of 5 stars This item can be dangerous, February 6, 2010

I have had several occasions where I could not release the item when I put it in or took it out of the oven. In both cases my dinner ended up on the floor. Thank god there wasn't a child near by. I think these should be recalled. The silicone strips are simply too tacky.

1.0 out of 5 stars "Too Big" agree, December 14, 2009
This review is from: Calphalon Twill Thumb Mitt (Kitchen)
I agree with Josh who wrote the "Too Big" review. Good quality but too big and the thumb is too short. You have no dexterity, to the point that they do not feel safe to use while moving hot cookie trays.

5.0 out of 5 stars Safe oven mits, February 5, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I am really glad I bought these mitts. I had other mitts that really didn't protect my hands from the heat. It scared me. Then I bought these mitts. I highly recommend them. They keep me confident that when I pull my Lodge Pot out of the oven I will not get burnt.

They also wash up easy.
