Not the Best Designed Skimmer,
By Michela (Seattle, WA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Calphalon Nylon Skimmer (Kitchen)
The Calphalon Nylon Skimmer looks nice in my tall crock filled with the other black nylon Calphalon utensils. However, it is not useful. The holes in this skimmer are too large for collecting froth from the surface of simmering soups, stocks, and stews. Since one never really touches the pan with a skimmer, to me, it does not matter if the skimmer is plastic. I recommend the Calphalon Stainless Steel Mesh Skimmer instead.

It melted in the first time I used it, and I just used it to get my dumplings.

I won't dribel on about the quality of the Calphalon utensils as everyone already knows that. I will drivel on however about how much I use this skimmer. In the fall during canning season this is by far the best for skimming up blanced beans or hot tomatoes or peaches. The cup area on the skimmer is large and will haul more than you think.

Not good for skimming,

The slots are easier to clean than some brands' holes but they are too large for skimming foam/crud from stock/etc. Instead, I use a small plastic mesh screen (about 6" long and [inexpensive] from the local supermarket) which fits neatly inside a deep stock pot--something that all the long-handled ones won't do. The Calphalon skimmer gets occasional use stir-frying, but you do have to be careful since temperatures can exceed 400 oF. Also, I found that all the Calphalon tools tend to get a little "limp" when hot.

I've owned this skimmer for several years and love it! It is a great size and can be used for pasta such as macaroni, penne, ziti, bowties, etc., as well as legumes and other vegetables. I cook often and probably use this skimmer at least once a week.

Great Calphalon brand, reliable and trustworthy. Will last forever. Shows no wear. Great to use for non-stick pots and pans.

compared to other Calphalon products, this is just "so-so",

We got this utensil free as part of a Calphalon promo when we purchased a set of their pots and pans (which we highly recommend), and I must confess that we get way more use from the other Calphalon products that we own than we do from this utensil. The function of this skimmer is too specific to be used for anything other than skimming and it doesn't always do a good job of that. The size of the scoop is excellent, but the width of the slots seem to be too wide to productivly skim on a consistant basis. We sometimes use this for scooping pasta, but any regular slotted spoon can accomplish that just as well. If you want a good quality Calphalon utensil, try the very multi-functional "stir fry scoop", which I would rate 5 stars. We use that ALL the time! |
