4.0 out of 5 stars Good Tongs for Nonstick Pots and Pans
The Calphalon nylon tongs work well for turning, lifting, and removing food when cooking with nonstick pots and pans. They can also be used for serving at casual meals. I have all the Calphalon black nylon cooking utensils and keep them in a tall crock near my stove. The only problem with these tongs is that I have to put a rubber band around them to keep them closed for...

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice idea, bad product
What a great idea I thought, a set of tongs that wont damage my pots!
True, they wont scratch your pots, but they also wont pick anything up.
Please do NOT waste your money on these. They are not strong enough, or tensioned enough to pick anything other than salad.
They wont close all the way on anything, and simply bend when you try to grab something...

Please do NOT waste your money on these. They are not strong enough, or tensioned enough to pick anything other than salad.
They wont close all the way on anything, and simply bend when you try to grab something solid.
The ideal solution would be a set of tongs that are metal, but have rubber/plastic tips, someone please make one!

2.0 out of 5 stars Inferior to traditional tongs. Not recommended., August 1, 2002

These tongs are a bit hard to hold and to squeeze. More importantly, the odd-shaped business end does not hold food very well. Skip this item and buy traditional spring-loaded aluminum chef's tongs with scalloped edges, which are very reasonably priced and work very well. Or if you need to work on a non-stick surface, choose bamboo or wooden tongs. But skip these; they don't work well.

I have all the Calphalon black nylon cooking utensils and keep them in a tall crock near my stove. The only problem with these tongs is that I have to put a rubber band around them to keep them closed for storage in the crock. Even if stored in a kitchen drawer, the tongs are spread out and get tangled with other utensils. They are very durable and are easy to clean (I wash all my Calphalon nylon utensils by hand.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great with Grilling Machines!, January 9, 2001

I gave these tongs to my mother as a Christmas present. She loves them. This makes a great addition to the George Forman Lean Mean Fat-reducing Grilling Machines because the nylon tongs will not ruin the non-stick surface.

2.0 out of 5 stars Close but no cigar, July 30, 2003

No scratches on my pans but these tongs function poorly. They work fine for vegetables and small items but meats tend to slip from the jaws, especially heavier cuts. This can pose a dangerous situation if the meat slips from the tongs back into a pan that may have extremely hot juices or liquids within the pan. A large center cut chop slid out of the tongs the first time I used them and spattered hot drippings in every direction. If you plan to use the tongs for meats I would go with another product.

Can't say enough good things about this set of tongs. It's the first pair I've come across that was non-metal and so wouldn't damage my nonstick pans. YES!! Worth every solid cent.

They also pick up wonderfully -- highly important. I've had tongs that claimed to be tongs but couldn't pick up food...

I searched for months for a heat resistant set of tongs that I could use with my non-stick cookware. The Calphalon Nylon Tongs fit comfortable in your hand and grip everything well. One end is serrated for easy in pan cutting. With its long handle, I have also used them on my outdoor grill. Great for bacon, chicken, and anything pan fried.

3.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly difficult to use, November 19, 2001

On the plus side: they won't scratch non-stick surfaces, they won't heat up, they're easy to clean. On the minus side: you have to pry them open wide enough to pick up anything thicker than a sausage link! These are seriously unwieldy tongs. I made pork medallions the other day and found myself using both hands to pick up one small piece of meat. Not acceptable to the point where it outweighs most of the plusses.

If all you'll use this for is bacon, then you're fine. If you want to manipulate anything much thicker, get the standard metal kind that spring open wide.

As a follow up: The tongs broke when I tried to pick up a pork chop. Not recommended.

These are great. They're long, they fit well in your hand, they grip well and they don't scratch your nonstick cookware. What's not to like?

4.0 out of 5 stars great for smaller things, October 22, 2003
This review is from: Calphalon Nylon Tongs (Kitchen)
these tongs are great for flipping potatoes or other smaller things in a frying pan. However, I have to use my larger metal grilling tongs to grab bigger/heavier things like chicken or big pieces of meat - these just bend under the weight.

Although that sounds bad, I'm particularly concerned about using metal on my pans and pots, so I use this whenever I can. I don't know if anything plastic will be strong enough for bigger things, but if you find something, I recommend buying that instead.
