My wife owns the previous edition of The Calvin Commentaries and I think it was way better. The content is exactly the same, but the quality of the paper is definitely inferior. This is lighter paper which makes each book lighter and thinner. The previous edition had brown hard cover, this new edition is red hardcover with a seal commemorating the 500th anniversary of Calvin's birth.
This package comes with the INSTITUTES OF CHRISTIANITY. The previous edition was two volumes, this new edition is just one volume. Again the quality of the paper is inferior and also there are some editions in the content.
Overall, I am satisfied with this purchase but not as I expected.

I gave one each of these sets to two of my grown sons. I have an earlier version. They each were quite happy with the books and described them to me. The books do not sound unduly skimpy in paper and they were pleased with the binding. When you think about it, less than $10 a book plus a copy of the Institutes on top of that, makes for a fantastic bargain. I used super-saver shipping and that makes it even better.

Calvin's commentaries are as up to date today as they were over 400 years ago. Even for those who are not Reformed in their theology the pastoral and spiritual nature of his writing is commendable. Further, Calvin made it a point of pride to be terse. He positively despised long winded explanations and you won't find any in these works.

Great bargain, excellent library resource.

Tired of wasting your money on one volume commentaries that are untrustworthy and uninformative? If you get to the point where you want a brilliant commentary set, this is the place. Don't be intimidated by the size of this: I don't read through these; I refer to them when I am stuck on a passage or want to explore a verse in depth. Luther and Calvin were the two greatest minds in Christianity. If anyone interprets a verse differently from Calvin and Luther, you can bet 99% of the time that they have drifted into heresy. This is a joy to use. Calvin has an uncanny ability to discuss all the possible interpretations of a verse and then explain clearly and convincingly what the correct one is. He inspires devotion, not dry academic analysis. For this price, an incredible value. I will be using these for the rest of my life.

. . . then you are a fool not to purchase this set, which at the moment is under $200.00 here. I have the set and by no means have I read the whole thing, but I turn to it regularly and have read the entirety of some volumes. The writing is surprisingly fresh, considering, and the scholarship has not been surpassed given Calvin's limitations. I don't share any, really, of his views, and I certainly don't favor burning "heretics" at the stake (I'm not even a Christian, just an admirer of the Bible), but whoa, the guy was quite a reader and thinker and your own biblical explorations will definitely be enriched by owning this set. Be aware it takes up about three feet of shelf space! But the books are hard bound and reasonably sturdy. They will last.

Commentaries provide a wealth of information to a student of the Bible. We can turn to them when we encounter a passage in Scripture that gives us pause. We can also use them to understand a particular point of view. Both of those can be found in John Calvin's 22 volume commentary set.

John Calvin was one of the great reformers of the church. He devoted himself to preaching and teaching God's Word. Throughout his life he wrote about the doctrines we find in Scripture. His Institutes of Christian Religion is a classic and his commentaries are excellent as well.

He is most known for his teaching on the doctrines of grace, or better known as Calvinism. In this commentary set you will find those doctrines expounded throughout. This shouldn't be a hindrance to anyone who objects to that teaching because there is so much more in this commentary set than those doctrines. Also, this will give you a better understanding of those doctrines which is a good thing.

As I prepare to teach Sunday School or preach a sermon I turn to Calvin as much as anyone else. His commentaries are an invaluable tool in my Bible study and will be in yours. Your faith will grow as you sit under Calvin's teaching.

The only books of the Bible Calvin didn't write a commentary on are 2 and 3 John and Revelation.

As an added bonus, you will receive a copy of his Institutes when you order through Amazon. Don't pass up this commentary set.

When it comes to the exegesis of the Holy Scriptures, no one, and I mean no one, can beat John Calvin. I've gone through a chunk of his commentary on Romans and the amount of insight I've gained is astounding. His ability to unpack a verse is breath-taking. I heartily recommend this collection to all those who desire to attain a better knowledge of the True and Living God.

John Calvin is best known for his "Institutes of the Christian Religion," and I would highly recommend this to anyone desiring to understand the thought of this great reformer. In addition to being a wonderful theologian, Calvin was also an insightful and first-rate exegete of Scripture. Therefore, I would as highly recommend Calvin's commentary set as I would the "Institutes." I bought my commentary set a few months after my conversion to Christianity (from agnosticism) 35 years ago, and, despite owning the NICNT and the NICOT, as well as the Word Biblical Commentary, and the Hendriksen-Kistemaker NTC (as well as classics on individual books), I find myself coming back to Calvin time and again in order to truly understand the meaning of a passage. Although I do not agree with Calvin's interpretations 100% of the time (like the rest of humanity he was fallible), I do find his interpretations persuasive most of the time.

All things considered, the price of this edition is reasonable. If you're planning on serious biblical scholarship, buy it. It's worth it.
