This CD-ROM/Web site provides a very nice collection of encyclopedia-like information on the U.S. Civil War; including the ability to go online and check an updated calendar of Civil War events, or to chat with others with similar interests.

While the presentation could be criticized for glossing over details, the content does seem to be accurate and comprehensive, with 150 biographies, 750 images, and 75 video clips from documentaries that have run on the History Channel. All the important features that you would want in a reference are here. There's an interactive timeline that lets you click on a date and jump directly to a description of the event, and you can search the entire contents by keyword. We also found that it was easy to cut and paste pictures or text to any standard word processor. Weaknesses include a poorly designed set of games and clumsy scrolling features that make it difficult to read the text.

While not perfect, if you're a Civil War enthusiast, or are looking for a nice overview of Civil War history, this CD is one of the best available.
