Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is an absolutely standard and required reference work for every library, from public to university research." Choice --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

Book Description

This volume of the second edition of the Cambridge Ancient History traces the history of Rome from its origins to the eve of the Second Punic War. Although the period covered is essentially the same as in the undivided Volume VII of the first edition, the treatment of the material is completely fresh and is much more extensive.

The Cambridge Ancient History Volume 7, Part I: The Hellenistic World is an invaluable text for any serious student of the period. Edited by Walbank and Astin it covers the general history of the period from the death of Alexander to the point where Rome was about to enter the Hellenistic east as a major player.

The coverage of Macedonia by Walbank is particularly good as are the sections on science, warfare, townplanning and other specialized topics.
