Purchased in December 2011, the Cambridge 840A has proven to be an excellent piece of audio gear. Outside of the Klakity Klak of the Volume control I cannot fault this unit so far. This is the third piece of Cambridge gear I have ordered and all three have been above average in build quality, functionality and sound. A true test is how well these electronic devices operate in 5 to 10 years. You'll have to wait for that review. I have tried the 840A with three decent bookshelf speakers and all of them have improved sonically. Even my Pioneer and Sony CD players seem to benefit sonically with this unit. What is unbelievable is the price. At under $1000, I don't believe there are any competitors that can deliver the sonic performance of the 840A V2.

At the top of their integrated amp line, the Azur 840aV2 combines high power and quality build in a compact size. Not a lightweight, this amp is extremely well-built and has high quality controls and connectors. It has a lot of inputs, and some flexible ways to maximize the performance of inputs according to the user's needs. Even the remote has a solid, quality feel.
Alas, all is not perfect though. At this price point, the 840a should include a phono input but doesn't, which is a surprising omission on a pricey item like this. However, a welcome feature is the balanced line input, which is great for connecting high quality sources with balanced line outputs. If you don't need it, the input can be switched over to a regular unbalanced input. High quality speaker binding posts are includeed.
The compact size is also a welcome feature. With so much audio and video gear these days, a good amp that doesn't take up huge expanses of space is helpful. I replaced a much larger pile of separates with the 840a, which is the height of my old preamp alone.
Controls are very simple. A loudness control would be helpful but the bass and treble tone controls suffice and a direct feature bypasses the tone controls to please the purists. Cambridge uses a costly and precise resistor ladder controled by relays for volume control. The clickety clack sounds as the volume control is adjusted takes some getting used to. A side effect of this volume control system is the ability to adjust balance with the remote. This feature is missing on most modern remote controlled amps, which really helps when adjusting levels for your seating position.
The Azur's sound performance is confident, solid and well-behaved.

Less than a year old and the right channel died. Total junk - lightly used and well treated. Certainly had far less than 100 hours on it. Second Cambridge Audio product I have purchased which has died during the first year. Total garbage - customer support is non-existant - Ed Selley (Cambridge customer support rep) flat out stopped responding to my customer service inquiries on the Cambridge Audio support website. Do yourself a favor and avoid this company's products.

I've had this amplifier for 5+ years now. It's never let me down. It's handled whatever I've thrown at it, from pulse-pounding, in-your-face classic heavy metal -we're talking Twisted Sister, since I'm 40+ years old - to gut-grinding Techno-House - what my daughter listens to - you want go astray. This powerhouse delivers!!! I mainly use it with two huge Swan speakers and a DefTech center speaker - to deliver whatever sound is on cable t.v.!!! I used to be really high-tech because I was a Computer Science major at the state U. Since I dropped out and did not finish, this is what I ended up with. It's no joke though, and is capable of cranking up whatever you throw at it, from video games to top 40. Just give it a shot, and you won't be disappointed. When you unwrap it, I'm sure you'll be reassured by its weight. It's by far the heaviest component of my stereo system - which is a good sign!!! For those in the know~!!!
