The French philosopher and theologian Nicholas Malebranche was one of the most important thinkers of the early modern period. A bold and unorthodox thinker, he tried to synthesize the new philosophy of Descartes with the religious Platonism of St. Augustine. The Cambridge Companion to Philosophy is a thoughtful series that explores the comprehensive aspects of a particular thinker. A host of thoughtful scholars write on particular issues and contributions coming from the thinker in question. I have found this series to contribute a helpful commentary on the main work of the thinker and a comprehensive understanding of the thinker. This item on Malebranche is an example of just that--a fine survey of the thought forms of Malebranche. I enjoyed this book and found that it contributed to my understanding of Malebranche and his contemporaries.
