Several brilliant esays and a few lame ones,

This review is from: The Cambridge Companion to Kant and Modern Philosophy (Cambridge Companions to Philosophy) (Paperback)
Lisa Shabel's "Kant's Philosophy of Mathematics" is entirely brilliant. Hatfield's essay on the Kant's theory of space and time is also invaluable. A few essays demonstrate very poor understanding of Kant: Pippin's essay on Kant's politics is a prime example. He has no clue why paternalism which restricts individual freedom is not compatible with Kant's anti-paternalist individualism.
Overall, this is a great volume. Highly recommended. I recommend reading "Moral Faith and the Highest Good" (p.588) first. Kant's philosophy is fundamentally motivated by religion, and understanding him without understanding the motivation is near impossible. |
