Book Description

February 13, 1999 052149866X 978-0521498661
In this Companion, eminent British and American scholars offer a guide to the revolutionary cultural transformations of the first decades of the twentieth century. Chapters on the major literary genres, on intellectual, political and institutional contexts, and on film and the visual arts, provide close analyses and a broader set of interpretive narratives. A Chronology and Guide to Further Reading supply valuable orientation within the field. Students will find much-needed help with the difficulties of approaching Modernism, while the essays' original contributions will send scholars back to this volume for stimulating reevaluation.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must for curious readers of modernist works!, May 7, 2000

This review is from: The Cambridge Companion to Modernism (Cambridge Companions to Literature) (Paperback)
The Companion is especially for you, if you are the one who wants to know more about modernism, including the background of the period, the novels, the plays, the gender issues, and even the visual arts and the films. Reading the book together with "Modernism 1890-1930," edited by Malcolm Bradbury and James McFarlane, you will find yourself more familiar with modernism and you are most likely to dig deeper and deeper.

First Sentence:
Although the difficulties of defining Modernism are properly aired elsewhere in this volume, its broad outlines are now only too familiar: its peak period in the Anglo-American context lay between 1910 and 1925, while its intellectual formation encompassed a coming to terms with the lines of thought associated with Marx, Freud, and Nietzsche. Read the first page
