Book Description

If you use statistics and need easy access to simple, reliable definitions and explanations of modern statistical concepts, then look no further than this dictionary. Over 3600 terms are defined, covering medical, survey, theoretical, and applied statistics, including computational aspects. Entries are provided for standard and specialized statistical software. In addition, short biographies of over 100 important statisticians are given. Definitions provide enough mathematical detail to clarify concepts and give standard formulae when these are helpful. The majority of definitions then give a reference to a book or article where the user can seek further or more specialized information, and many are accompanied by graphical material to aid understanding.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Everitt's text is broken up with many well-chosen graphs, diagrams and pictures; numerical examples are sometimes used to illuminate the written entries. These features help make it the more attractive book to skim through, allowing the happy accident of lexicographic adjacency to divert you to fascinating byways...One could not ask for more...[an] excellent value."
Significance

"The author judiciously provides graphs, tables, and equations to halp make the definitions clear and precise... This useful book will be valuable on the reference shelf of statisticians, students of statistics, and scientists working with statistics."
Christine M. Anderson-Cook, Journal of the American Statistical Association

5.0 out of 5 stars well-written statistics dictionary, February 12, 2008
Brian Everitt is a well known statistician and author. This dictionary was prepared by a scholar and includes many famous statistician as well as statistical terms. It provides concise and accurate descriptions and in many cases also includes pictures and formulae. Literature references are often mentioned. Particularly useful to biostatisticians. It is an excellent reference document.

3.0 out of 5 stars Still Needs Work, March 16, 2005
By
Nathan Oakes (Ashland, Oregon) - See all my reviews
The focus of this dictionary is mathematical statistics, not applied statistics, and is intended for graduates and professionals. The definitions are not simple and include lots of equations. There is no other dictionary like it and it has the potential for being developed into a very useful handbook. I think it needs a lot of work, though. First, the coverage is lacking. I could not find many terms that should be in a dictionary targeted at professionals (cf. Dodge). Second, many of the definitions could stand revising for clarity (cf. Upton & Cook). Third, while there are many figures, they don't always illustrate the point as well as they could (cf. Sahai & Khurshid; Upton & Cook).

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for every teacher and researcher, May 28, 2003
By
Karel Kupka (PARDUBICE Czech Republic) - See all my reviews
An excellent yet concise encyclopedy of surprisingly wide range of statistical topics, very dense and ballanced text. Exhaustive descriptions and definitions on few lines of text with good referrences. I can hardly think of basic or advanced statistical terms not included here. Thanks.
