More than 70 contributors have prepared this substantial reference on China. Topics cover history, law, medicine, religion, literature, and architecture, with less emphasis on social conditions. Compared with the first edition ( LJ 5/15/83), this version contains many of the same maps, illustrations, text, and a few statistics, but substitutes Pinyin for Wade-Giles transliteration and brings history up through the 1980s. The maps, though plentiful, at times lack clear color delineation and the writers' styles vary from readable to dry. A useful purchase, especially for smaller libraries.
