5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Grammar for Learners, June 8, 2008

This grammar is very different from any other grammar that I've ever seen. Instead of saying what is 'correct' and what's not, it also describes how English is actually used by native speakers.

This is specially useful for those who are learning English as second language, like myself, because it contains a lot of information on frequency of usage that helps on choosing words (between also, as well and too for instance) and has lots of warnings of common English learners mistakes.

Disclaimer: Sorry for any English error. I've not read all the grammar already. :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars "A Comprehensive Guide" says it all, May 22, 2010
By

This review is from: Cambridge Grammar of English Paperback with CD ROM: A Comprehensive Guide (Paperback)
I don't know if any customer review could do justice to this encyclopedic work. Its scope is so broad, thorough, scholarly, yet so accessible. Whenever I have a question that simply cannot be answered elsewhere, I turn to the Cambridge Grammar of English Paperback with CD ROM: A Comprehensive Guide and quickly find what I need. I was looking for the One True Grammar Book, a really authoritative tome, something academics themselves turn to for clarification--something technical but not laden with linguistics jargon, something like A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language by Quirk or The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language by Huddleston. However, I couldn't afford them. Continuing the search, I hit upon this one, and it's turned out to be an invaluable tool. It's indispensable for nonnative English speakers groping for answers to the idiosyncrasies of English, for native English speakers working on the fine points of their mother tongue, and for beleaguered instructors looking for clear explanations with which to help their students. It has satisfied the need for an authoritative guide so much so that I no longer feel that I want the other books. I like the Cambridge Grammar of English's emphasis upon the nuances of spoken English, which seem to befuddle foreign students no matter how much formal grammar they've studied. The book's focus is obviously British-centered English, but it's not all lorries and lifts; 99% of it applies to American English, too. So, if you're on a budget (or not), get this one. England has given us many good things over the years--the Beatles, Dr. Who, Monty Python, and, gratefully, now this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Grammar in its essence, June 18, 2009
This review is from: Cambridge Grammar of English Paperback with CD ROM: A Comprehensive Guide (Paperback)
This book was designed for more advanced students as you won't find simple explanations. It goes straight to the point in a more academic way without being too complicated. It offers the students of the english language a wider range of explanations be it written or spoken.

5.0 out of 5 stars The packaging needs to improve, June 24, 2010

The book is very nice. I liked it a lot. I received it after 35 days (International Shipping). No problem. The packaging is not so good. The book had some damages in the corners. The damages was not big ones, but the packaging needs to improve.
Thank you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but not reliable 100% for advanced use, October 15, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The book itself is absolutely recommended for beginners as well as advanced learners of english, as it is clear, effctive, user friendly and reliable. The CD is very useful as you have the full book and every example (real english from Cambridge international corpus) pronounced with very clear pronunciation in it. The main feature is the well balanced mix of guidelines (grammar rules) and real life examples of use. I bought two more books, very different from Cambridge, to complete my reference collection: "Biber,Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English" and "Quirk, A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language". The first one is good but only for very specialistic purpouses and I don't recommend it to any studend (neither advanced). The second one is a must-have book for everybody who wants to build a strong and structured knowledge of english grammar (of course only as a reference and not handbook, unless you are really motivated to spend a large amount of time in studying, the good old way of studying, I mean). My only disappoint about "Cambridge Grammar of english" is that some topics explainations are not fully reliable if compared with the other books above.

This review is from: Cambridge Grammar of English Paperback with CD ROM: A Comprehensive Guide (Paperback)
This tome draws heavily on the Cambridge International Corpus of English words used in print and everyday speech. Those of us interested in text mining and the vast richness of the expressiveness of written and spoken English can tip our hat in adulation at this remarkable offering.
