This review is from: The Cambridge Handel Encyclopedia (Hardcover)
The Cambridge Handel Encyclopedia is a must for all Handel lovers. Written and edited by today's leading Handel experts, it reflects all the latest scholarship. Handel's operas, oratorios, and instrumental cantatas each get their own individual articles. Anthems, Te Deums, orchestral works, and chamber music receive lengthy sections in collective articles. The article on Handel himself is divided into 21 sections covering his life, family relationships, sexuality, religion, languages, health, library, and other topics. In all, the volume contains more than 700 articles on almost anyone or anything connected to Handel--arrangements, borrowings, composers, instrumentation, librettos, librettists, musical forms, patrons, performers, performance practice, significant places, etc., etc. Many articles include a list of further readings. Appendixes provide a catalog of Handel's works, a chronology of Handel's life, his family tree, a list of paintings and statues of Handel, and a selective discography. If you can afford it, you'll find it to be worth every penny. It's not just a reference book but enjoyable reading as well.
