Great looking and awesome sound, November 7, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Cambridge SoundWorks Newton Series M80 Bookshelf Speakers (Pair), Blonde Maple (Electronics)
For all of you who are sick of black boxes - your wishes have been answered. These blend right into my bookcase, and sound great. Friends can not believe I am getting such booming sound from these speakers. Cambridge makes great stuff, and I have been a fan since they started in the 80s. These speakers are a whole new look updated for them, but they keep all the great sound they are know for. The only drawback if there is one, is that the off white grills should be kept away from peanut butter and jelly hands on little ones. Not usually a problem if your house is baby-proofed. Now if they could only make my TV look better in my living room, my wife would let me get a bigger one!

excellent sound with a little too much bass, August 22, 2005
This review is from: Cambridge SoundWorks Newton Series M80 Bookshelf Speakers (Pair), Blonde Maple (Electronics)
I bought these speakers a couple of days ago. They have a beatiful, clear sound - I tried them with classical, jazz, and all kinds of rock - you feal like sitting in a studio behind that glass wall. (And this means better than sitting in the concert hall - live performances rarely sound this good.) Two minor cons to consider:
1. The bass seems a little too strong for me (the speaker actually features a bass booster in the back) and this kind of overemphasizes the bass/drums. But it may be that I'm just not used to speakers with a solid bass. I turned down the bass a little on my amp and it helped a lot. Also, the booster can be wired separately (e.g., if you have a separate channel in your amp), which could help, but I haven't tried that.
2. The color of the sound is quite sensitive to the alignment/direction of the speakers so make sure to place them a little above your ear level, in a 20-45-degree angle from each other.
And yes, they look beautiful.
