To my ears, the sound of the Oontz XL has more range than the Bose Mini.

What I would, therefore, prefer to do is to praise Cambridge SoundWorks for its unequaled, unparalleled customer service.

First off, it looks great. Flat black, simple, smooth, and can easily blend in to decor. I've used it while finishing my basement (drywall dust everywhere) and it cleans up like new with a damp paper towel. Controls are simple and easy to use.
Second, the sound is incredible. This is not going to replace your surround sound and amplified sub, but I can only assume you already know that. On that note, it's clearer and louder than many soundbars I've seen/heard. The bass will not blow you away but you can feel it, you feel the notes, feel the sound, feel the music, not just hear it. Many wireless portable speakers lack in this department.
I hate to knock other products but I shopped around for months and did a lot if comparing. I've heard and would rate it better than the following.
- Bose Soundlink Mini $199
- Bose Soundlink $299
- Beats Pill by Dre $199 (awful)
- Sonos One $199
- Any wireless speaker from Lowe's $80-$100

I bought this for $119 and couldn't be happier! It looks great & sounds great ... Isn't that what we're all looking for?

I originally rated the Oontz XL two stars but revised the rating to four stars because Cambridge Soundworks customer service was so good at working with me to address quality control issues. The first unit I received had a problem where the sound would cut out at low listening levels. This turned out to be due to a firmware issue with some of the first units shipped. They overnight shipped a second unit to me and the sound cutout issue was solved. Unfortunately the second unit had distorted bass and sounded like it had a bad speaker. They quickly shipped a third unit to me and it had the cutout issue solved and had clean bass. I am very happy with this unit and it sounds great. It is too bad about the quality control issues but the great customer service made up for the quality control problems. Just make sure you get a good one.

I own the original ultra-portable Cambridge Soundworks Oontz (best ultra-portable speakers under $150) so this one was a must buy for me.

When I first bought it I felt somewhat let down as I had very high expectations for it. The sound didn't quite as good (probably because I'm so used to listening to bookshelf speakers)...however after several hours of breaking in the sound got a lot better. I tested the unit with my high-end Cowon Mp3 player thru AUX Port (better than bluetooth) and damn it sounded clear with nice bass.I even use it on my laptop with my high-end Dragonfly DAC (Computer Sound Card for those who don't know what a DAC is) and it sounded amazing.

I wanted to compare this portable with much more expensive portable speakers...naming Big Jambox and Bose Minilink. The Big Jambox sounds nice although its sounds somewhat boomy to me. Some people may prefer this type of sound so if you're that person you'd like the Jambox. The bose mini packs a bunch of bass (the most of the three) for its size and sounded somewhat too warm, so this doesn't really sound natural to me although it has that unique sound experience. The weakness of the Bose Mini is that, because it's an ultra-portable size speaker, the sound is not as immersive as the other two. After several hours of listening the Oontz XL has the best clarity of them all. In terms of bass the Big Jambox is probably the winner (probably due to its size since it is the biggest out of the three) although the Bose Mini offers very nice and clean bass for its size. I prefer clarity in my music so Oontz XL is the overall winner.

I've not heard competing products and that does not matter since I am not comparing this to them. I am comparing this to what is promised, deep rich bass and amazing sound. The music comes out flat with lackluster bass, if at all. True, it does not distort at the highest volumes but then it's harsh enough at those volumes that it doesn't need distortion to make it unpleasant. I kept this anyway because it's lighter and the batteries last longer than my Soundworks Playdock from a decade ago, remember that? The Playdock's sound is far superior but it's heavy, contains a sealed lead-acid battery, and no bluetooth.

Well, I've only used the XL about a half dozen times over two months and one of the active drivers is no longer working. Now it is a single active driver mono with four passive radiators. How sad and pathetic. And it's well passed the 30 day replacement only warranty. Good thing I paid less than a hundred for it but still, it confirms my feeling of ever decreasing quality of Cambridge Soundworks products ever since their second generation Soundworks Radio, of which I have three and only one of them still have a working CD player. Another one I had to get replaced within a week. But I digress... It is hard for me to put any trust into their products that contain any sort of electronics anymore. I have had many amplified CSW computer speaker sets from last decade and they are all still going strong with numerous new owners. But now, it seems like their quality has gone down and without the convenience of a storefront, it's harder for me to justify ordering something from them sight unseen and unheard.

The XL is great in concept and is very sleek looking. The buttons are hard to read in lower light. Build quality seems very high. Too bad working quality is not.
