Product Description

Camco's 5500W 240V screw-in ripple type ultra low watt density water heater elements are better suited for areas with problem water (hard water, lime, etc.) Premium Ultra LWD Lime Life elements carry a limited 5 year warranty. Ultra LWD and special metal surface (high performance nickel-chromium stainless steel alloy) reduce chances of lime build-up. They resist dry firing and are ideal for problem water areas and locations with intermittent water supply. Screw-in type elements fit most models of American, AO Smith, Bradford White, Craftmaster (prior to 1991), GE, GS Wood (certain models), Kenmore, Lochinvar, Maytag, Mor-Flo, Reliance, Rheem, Richmond, Rudd, Sears, State, Whirlpool and most water heaters manufactured after 1994. The replacement element must be the same voltage and wattage as the element being replaced. Never exceed the nameplate rating on the water heater.

Probably like most of you buying this product, I was referred here by Kal's site, theelectricbrewery.com. I followed his instructions and installed this into a keggle that I use as a boil kettle in my homebrewing setup. 5500W heats my strike water very fast and I only need to maintain 50-60% on the duty cycle to keep a rolling boil.

I'm a numbers guy and the rest of the reviews lacked the data I was looking for so I am sharing it for those that want to know.
I have 50 gallon Bradford White water heaters with dual heating elements rated at 4500 watts each. Pretty standard stuff.

Here is what real testing revealed:
Line voltage 211
Watt draw per element 3350

After installing the Camco element, 4200 watts draw

My breaker capacity with both elements going used to be 70% according to my energy monitoring system. With the new elements it's 87%.

These units are 25% stronger than the OEM elements which had a lot of lime scale on them (5 years old). That's a 5 star rating for me because much more you'd be risking popping breakers

I use this heater for my brewing set-up. It heats up fast and works great. Since full power on this unit is great for quickly bringing things to a boil, but it then becomes too hot, I added an Amico Solid State Relay SSR Voltage Resistance Regulator 25A 24-380V AC 500K Ohm 1/4W so I can manually control the heaters output.

The SSR allows me to manually control the temperature of the pot, but since I had good luck using a Dual Digital Display PID Temperature Controller. on my smoker, I plan on modifying this in the future to run off the PID. That will allow me to dial in an exact temperature which it will hold and maintain.

I use one such 5500W element for batch sizes of up to 80L (21+ gal). Works GREAT. If you are having difficulties achieving a strong rolling boil with less liquid, double-check you are running this with 240 volt power (element connected across two hot legs of 120V each). Firing this element with 120V and neutral will yield at most 1375W worth of power.

Upgrading the bottom element in our tank to this higher-wattage, lower watt density element has made a world of difference in hot water availability.

We used to have to wait an hour between showers, now it can almost keep up in real-time.

If I were buying a new tank, I would just pull and discard the junk elements that they ship with and replace them with these. Save a lot of grief and shivering.

I installed this in my brewing pot. I've brewed 5 batches with it without any problems. Just have to wipe the element down after each batch. I use the Brew-in-a-Bag all grain method, and the nylon bag rests right on the element. No marks or any damage on the bag.

Used this to replace a burnt out heater element. I have a typical tract home hot water heater, and this fit it perfectly.

We used to run out of hot water with our other heating element, but after installing this one, we never seem to have that problem. It works excellent!

This is something even beginner DIYers can do. I just had to flip off the circuit breaker, turn off the water at the top of the heater, and drain the tank with a hose. I had to buy a special socket to remove the old one, which was sold on amazon for less than $10.

The only issue I ran into was trying to get this element screwed on straight. With the way it's curved, the weight distribution makes it tough to screw in. But it's not too tough.
