Who'd have thought that Larry Buchanan, that most reviled of low-budget filmmakers, could pen such a warm, involving, ingratiating and fact-filled overview of his own career? Long regarded with disfavor, Mr. Buchanan explains the whys and wherefores of his cinematic output, showing he did the best he (or anyone) could with what monies and talent were available to him. Sci-fi fans may be disappointed by the short shrift he gives his mid-Sixties triumphs -- "The Eye Creatures," "In The Year 2889," etc. -- but it still adds up to a fascinating look back on a career too often dismissed by moviegoers.

-- makes TERRIBLE movies, and he cheerfully admits to it. You've seen "Mars Need Women," "In The Year 2888" and "Zontar, the Thing from Venus." You've just forgotten them, writing them off as dimly-remembered dreams you think you saw off the late-late-late show. A gifted raconteur, Buchanan takes us on a tour of his wacky world.OK -- I'm partial. He extesnsively quotes my essays on him thorughout. Does that disqualify me on grounds of conflicting interests? |
