Book Description

January 15, 2008
Nearly four decades ago Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin left some mementos on the ancient lunar soil of the Sea of Tranquility. Among these was a small brittle silicon disc with microscopic messages of goodwill from 73 world leaders. In 1969, with only weeks left before the Apollo 11 liftoff, NASA worked feverishly on a crash project to miniaturize messages from American and world leaders to enshrine them on a material suited for the harsh environment of the Moon. This book reveals a never-before-told story of the disc, along with many rare and astounding photographs.

Review

Neil Armstrong and I almost forgot to leave the silicon disc on the moon. But no one should forget the messages beautifully portrayed in Tahir Rahman's book, We Came in Peace for All Mankind. The disc will last on the lunar surface for a thousand years. --Buzz Aldrin, Apollo 11 astronaut

In the ancient dust of the Moon's Sea of Tranquility there sits a tiny silicon disc bearing messages of goodwill from the nations of Earth. In the four decades since Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin left behind the first human footprints on another world, those messages have gone largely unread - until now. In this beautiful and inspiring book Tahir Rahman spotlights the words of peace and hope that reflect the true spirit of mankind's greatest adventure. --Andrew Chaikin, author of A Man on the Moon

Landing on the Moon was a shared global event which nearly all humankind felt transcended politics. Tahir Rahman's beautifully produced commemorative book, We Came in Peace for All Mankind, takes us back to that priceless moment when all of the people on this Earth were truly one... --James R. Hansen, New York Times bestselling author of We Came in Peace for all Mankind

About the Author

Tahir Rahman is a passionate enthusiast of space exploration and history. He discovered the existence of the silicon disc messages while collecting space memorabilia. His research yielded very little information about the message disc- so he decided to write about it. His journey took him to John Sprague, son of the founder of Sprague Electric in Massachusetts and co-inventor of the disc. Rahman eventually met both Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, the first men to walk on the surface of the Moon on July 20, 1969. Aldrin was intrigued by his discovery of the detailed calligraphy and beauty that the disc revealed under a microscope- a lost part of history for 40 years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Beautiful Book, December 8, 2007
This review is from: We Came in Peace for All Mankind: The Untold Story of the Apollo 11 Silicon Disc (Special 40th Anniversary of Landing) (Hardcover)
For those of us who lived this historic event, this book is a wonderful way to relive it with a new twist. And for those who didn't and are yet to come it is a great way to share the adventure. Tahir has done a superb job of displaying the spectactular pictures and the messages from other countries. I only hope that people all over the world will have an opportunity to see this book.

This review is from: We Came in Peace for All Mankind: The Untold Story of the Apollo 11 Silicon Disc (Special 40th Anniversary of Landing) (Hardcover)
I was just 7 when men first set foot on the moon and I can still remember the excitement as my parents explained what was going on and tried to impart to me the significance of what I was witnessing on our old black and white TV. Until I read this book I had no idea that over 70 nations sent unique messages of goodwill to be left on the moon forever. Tahir has done a wonderful job in collecting these messages together, as well as giving us many rare and beautiful photographs which pictorially document that time almost 40 years ago. I can heartily recommend this book for anyone with an interest in the space programme. However, it is far more than merely another book about Apollo, Neil Armstrong etc; it gives us a rare insight into how other nations apart from America perceived the significance of this monumental effort and event. In the turbulent times of the late 1960s, it is heart-warming to learn that so many countries which might, in many ways, be at odds with one another, genuinely wished the best for the men who landed on the moon and wanted to feel a part of the whole enterprise. That is the true message of this book and is perhaps a lesson that nations might learn from today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating. It will make a great coffee table book., December 4, 2007
This review is from: We Came in Peace for All Mankind: The Untold Story of the Apollo 11 Silicon Disc (Special 40th Anniversary of Landing) (Hardcover)
I was captivated by this book from the moment I saw it. I couldn't put it down. The photographs (all from Apollo 11) are in the most vivid colors that I have ever seen. My favorite photograph is where you can see the Earth as a tiny blue dot in the reflection of Aldrin's visor. Rahman has captured an event through a unique lens that will change the future historical emphasis on this fascinating tale of peace and human adventure.
