Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put hot water in my CamelBak Groove?

Yes. Hot water, NOT boiling water (maximum temperature: 100 degrees Fahrenheit), can be used in the CamelBak Groove. However, please be aware that the experience will be similar to drinking hot liquid through a straw, so use caution when doing so.

Can I put ice in my CamelBak Groove?

Yes. Feel free to fill the bottle with ice, but be sure to leave enough room in the bottle for the filter housing and tube assembly when the cap is replaced.

What will happen if I put sports drinks or juice in the CamelBak Groove?

The CamelBak Groove is designed and intended for use with water only. The filter may remove the flavor from these types of beverages, leaving you with unsavory water.

Can a child use the CamelBak Groove?

Children age 5 and under should not use the CamelBak Groove. The Bite Valve could become dislodged and pose a choking risk.

Can I use CamelBak Groove when I’m hiking in the back country or travelling abroad?

Only use the CamelBak Groove with potable tap water. The Fresh Filter contained in your CamelBak Groove is not a purifier and not certified to be effective against bacteria, cysts, or viruses. It does not remove harmful microscopic pathogens that may be contained in tap water outside of the US, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.

Can I use the CamelBak Groove in high-altitude / low-pressure environments (i.e. airplanes, mountain altitudes, etc)?

Yes, but with extra care. Always keep the bottle right side up and the bite valve in the closed position. Remove the straw for additional protection. Expect a bit of "spurt" during the first sip.

Is the CamelBak Groove microwave safe?

Feel free to use the CamelBak Groove to warm up liquids (i.e., up to a minute). Do NOT microwave with the cap (or straw or filter) in place as it contains metal screws that are not microwave safe.

What are the maximum temperatures (freezing / boiling) that the CamelBak Groove can withstand?

The CamelBak Groove can withstand being filled with water ranging in temperature from 34 - 100 degrees Fahrenheit. We do not recommend freezing water inside the bottle or boiling it. Extremely hot fluids can damage your CamelBak Groove.

What if I accidentally washed my Fresh Filter in the dishwasher?

If you accidentally wash your Fresh Filter in the dishwasher, we recommend that you discard it and place a new Fresh Filter in your bottle.

Important Information

Directions
Change your filter regularly to ensure great-tasting water. You may need to change your filter more or less often depending on the amount of water you consume.

My tap water at home tastes great--or should I say, it's tasteless (in a good way). But at work it's not so convenient to get drinking water except from the vending machine, so I got this Camelbak bottle especially for work. I've been happy with it for that use, though it's a little small (just over half a liter) for hiking or any situations where you won't be able to refill it readily.

My last water bottle had a nickel-sized spout to drink from, which I loved, but it didn't seal tightly and trickled water in my bag one time too many. This Camelbak Groove is spillproof, which I do appreciate, though I'm not crazy about the bite valve. Water flows up a straw and through a rubbery valve that opens when you bite on it. I always feel as if the drinking-to-sucking ratio is low, with too much effort required to get a good drink. I haven't drunk from this kind of delivery system since I was an infant, so maybe I'll get used to it in time.

The replaceable, tube-shaped filter will work for 300 fills of the bottle, according to the product insert. It doesn't remove any pathogens, just bad taste from minerals and treatment. The bottle can be used without the filter and I've been wondering if the water would come up the straw with less effort if I tried that. Hmmm ....

So I've got a nice classy-looking bottle that won't spill and fits in my car's cup holder, and I've got good-tasting water at work (even though I have to work for it). I'm happy with that.

The Camelbak Groove is loaded with features. Some I liked, and some I'm not such a fan of.

The lid flips closed to keep from spilling, but even when open it won't spill because of a feature called Big Bite Valve. This Valve is a love-hate with me. I like that it won't spill, I don't like it that I have to bite and suck on the Valve to drink from it. My daughter, on the other hand, loves it. Let me add that the handle works very well for carrying multiple ways. I won't repeat the specific information on the material specs, you can read the manufacturer's description above.

The main new feature to this bottle is a taste filter in the straw. It's a carbon filter like in your Brita water filter. It doesn't purify water, just improves the taste. The manufacturer says it will last 3 month or more depending on use. I've lived in some places where I sure could have used a taste filter! And it will work without filter in place - functioning like a fat straw.

I highly recommend the Camelbak Groove if you live where the water comes with an "off" taste. Save the environment and your taste buds!

I have a couple of Camelbak products that I really like - a backpack system for biking and a waist pack for trail running. So, I'm already used to the Camelbak mouthpiece that you bite on to start water flow.

This small BPA-free bottle is well made and a perfect size for the cup holder in my car. I like the big loop at the top, as it is easy to hang the bottle from a finger when I'm carrying a bunch of other stuff. The pivoting mouthpiece is nice as it stores the nipple out of the way so that if you knock the bottle over, or have a curious cat or dog, the mouthpiece stays clean (unlike the bicycle water bottles that I usually use).

The first time I took a drink from the bottle I received for review, I turned it upside down, like a bike bottle. Not the way to go - the water flows from the bottom of the bottle via a straw. Upside down and you'll get air. That figured out (!), I have no problems drinking from the bottle with it upright. The handle does not get anywhere near my face, as reported by other reviewers - it is opposite my mouth and the bottle is not tilted. I hear no sound at all as a one-way valve/flap lets air into the bottle as I drink. Another review reported an annoying noise, so there may be some quality control issues.

I do agree with other reviewers on the quantity of water you get from the nipple. It took a lot of mouth muscle to draw less water than I really wanted from the bottle. Running around town, this was not that bad, but there's no way I could get as much water as I might need if exercising.

The filter is the unique feature of this product, but I'm not sure how good it is. I'm fortunate to live in the mountains of Montana where the water tastes amazingly good.

Initially I loved this bottle because I could re-fill it at work several times and not have to taste the weird flavor that comes from the faucets at work. I would drink 3-4 within a workday and it was convenient to carry around at work. However, after about 2 months it started making a strange noise when I would suck on it and less water would come out. After further inspection, the I noticed the internal tubing in the lid that connects the bite valve piece to the straw filter had developed a hole rendering the water bottle useless. This tubing is not sold as a replacement anywhere and I would have to buy a whole new bottle. At $25-$35 a piece, I don't feel it is worth it if the bottle needs replacing every 2 months. Camelbak needs to address this tubing issue or at least sell replacement parts.
