3.0 out of 5 stars Useful, but lacking critical features
I've owned this product for 2.5 years now. It's been my "go to" bag when doing day hikes. It's easy to fill, can hold a lot of water, sits fairly well on the back. It's got good storage for keys, wallet, insect repellent and the like in the smaller rear compartment. The open compartment is good for stuffing your light jacket in, binding a hat or sliding your hiking...

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful hydration system, but could be better, August 13, 2007
This review is from: CamelBak Men's M.U.L.E 3-Liter Hydration Pack (Sports)
I've owned quite few hydration systems over the years. Recently, I purchased this Camelbak M.U.L.E. hydration pack from Amazon and started using it. Compared to my old hydration systems (original Camelbak and Blackburn), this one is light years ahead. The original Camelbak systems had a fairly small opening which made it very difficult to put larger ice cubes into the reservoir not to mention cleaning the inside. Additionally, the closure caps for the reservoir were held in place with friction.

The current systems have openings large enough for me to put my fist through which makes filling the reservoir with ice cubes and cleaning the systems very easy. Additionally, the reservoir cap now screws on securely, so it's unlikely to pop open even if you land on your back after flipping over the handlebars.

The M.U.L.E. is well constructed of heavy duty fabric. The multiple compartments are definitely useful for carrying gear in addition to your car keys. There's even a pocked at the top for your music player with a hole to thread your headphones through.

My biggest complaint is that the reservoir is located in the back panel through a side zip pocket. This makes it a hassle to fill the reservoir because you have to almost remove it or risk pouring water accidentally into the compartment. On the other Camelbak systems (Lobo, Hydrobak, etc), the reservoir fill cap is located on the front of the pack and easily accessible without removing the reservoir.

Overall, this product is well constructed and useful. My complaint is really just a minor one because with 3 liters of fluid, it's unlikely you'll need to access the reservoir too often on any single day hike or bike expedition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Name Brand Is Where Its At - Camelbak!, September 9, 2007
OK, you could get a $20 Hydration Pack from Wal-Mart but why? I picked up my Camelbak M.U.L.E for $60 ($25 cheaper than MSRP). Chalk one up for Amazon!
The M.U.L.E is a great all around pack the holds 3 liters of water. You may think that 3 liters of water is too much, it will add extra weight, etc. Good news is you don't have to fill it up all the way all the time! I have used the pack for mountain biking, 4 wheeling and hiking so far and see endless possibilities. The pack is very customizable between the straps, clips and pockets. Pockets are very generous in size but do not add much extra size and weight to the pack. It looks big in the picture but is not that bad. The pictures show the pack totally stuffed with supplies but if you are just using it for water, spare bike tube, a multitool and a hat, it sits very flat on the back. The water reservoir is very tough and is warrantied for life.

Please don't go generic! Trust Camelbak.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything I need and more in portable hydration., March 24, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is yet another great product by CamelBak. The 100oz bladder gives me plenty of water to stay outdoors and active for most of the day, and there is enough room in the pouches to toss in a small book, some energy bars, sunscreen, cell phone, et cetera, as well as a dedicated pouch for an MP3 player with a padded and water resistant outlet for headphones. Basically, this pack is large enough to fit plenty in for a day trip outdoors, but small enough to not be cumbersome or annoying to lug around.

This pack is also extremely comfortable to wear. The shoulder straps are padded, adjustable, and ergonomically designed, narrowing at the base of the neck then curving out wider around the chest and ending at the base of the pack where it connects to a wide mesh support that wraps around your hips. The back is also padded and meshed, with grooves to allow airflow so that your back does not sweat as much while wearing it. There are also several straps on the pack (some of which are removable, in case they get on your nerves) that make it possible to stream-line the storage areas if you are not carrying much with you.

Overall, this is a great product, and a valuable asset for anyone who enjoys being actve outdoors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Owned for over 10 years, August 12, 2009

I have had my Camelbak M.U.L.E. since about 1999. I used it primarily to throw in the airplane/helicopter with me on a daily basis with water, some cliff bars, and flight gear. During that time it has also been used for an untold number of dayhikes. It is still going strong! I have killed several other backpacks during that time. My MULE is on it third bladder, but the pack has served me very, very well.[...]~Jeff

5.0 out of 5 stars gets the job done with ease., July 5, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
does everything I need a hydaration pack to do and then some. For a non-specific, general purpose hydration pack with a good amount of extra room for storage, this one is perfect. this is my third hydration pack and only the first only I'm completely satisified with. The only thing that would make it better would be a small pocket on one of the shoulder straps that I could use for a cell phone.

This review is from: CamelBak Men's M.U.L.E 3-Liter Hydration Pack (Sports)
My third Camelback and I'm still finding the best quality in all of them . Enough for a short bike trip with the exactly room for your stuff, Digital Camera, Granola bars, pocket Knife, a light rain coat
and 3 Lt of water Can I need to say more?

The straps make their job, also you can adjust the chest straps not only the lenght also up and down. And you can remove the hip straps. In the top it has a special soft compartment for your Ipod with special zipper ....
I'm very happy with it

This bag does it all for me. It's bright orange for added safety and has enough capacity (water and storage) for a long day hike or 60 mile bike ride.
There are plenty of compartments and I've managed to securely fasten my dslr w/ large lens in the netted pocket between the main pouch and the outer pouch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Pack, no complaints, July 12, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I've been using this pack at least once every weekend since I bought it (have used it at least 25 times).

It is compact enough to not get in the way when I'm scrambling through brush.

It has enough internal storage to keep 8 protein bars, sun glasses, camera, phone, keys, compass, knife, bandages, sun hat, wallet, guide book, and a full 100oz water bladder. And I wouldn't say it is "full", if I had more I wanted I could take it along.

It has straps on the outside, which I use to hold my large shell (in Seattle, you cannot predict the rain or the temperature).

It is strong enough that I've dropped it plenty of times onto rocks, pulled it through bushes / trees, and don't see any signs of wear & tear yet.

Great pack, exactly what I was looking for, I've taken 8 hour hikes with it without a problem, and without wishing for anything more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Versatile cycle/hike/commute bag - 15" Macbook fits inside!, August 13, 2010
This pack is pretty amazing. Obviously its great for day rides or hikes... but let's talk about daily use and commuting around the city. If you don't need the hydration you can temporarily pull it out or easily just wind the mouth hose up inside the water pouch pocket out of sight. The rest of the bag can pretty easily carry all my normal commute items. The main zipper pocket is just big enough to fit my Macbook 15 in its foam sleeve... then the laptop accessories, power cord, wireless mouse, notebook, cards, pens, as well as my bike's U-lock and additional cable for the front wheel. I can even hook my pool cue into the two tension strap loops on one of the sides to carry that upright as well. I added the 'Chrome Accessory Pouch' to one of the straps for easy access to my phone. It's a very versatile little bag!

5.0 out of 5 stars CamelBak Convert, April 9, 2010

After using Nalgene bottles for many years I finally took the leap and went for a CamelBak M.U.L.E. Wow, what a difference! This pack is the perfect size for a quick warm weather day hike with the basic essentials thrown in. After a 2.5 mile hike this afternoon I am hooked -- everything was very comfortable. The removable waist belt is a nice touch, as is the back padding and the soft lined phone/MP3/GPS pocket up top. Very impressed with the quality of the product, it definitely exceeded my expectations.
