If you are looking for a book providing a general coverage of landscape photography this is not it,
By Yoda (Hadera, Israel) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Camera Craft: Landscapes (Paperback)
This book suffers from a number of flaws. One, albeit minor, is that it is dated in that it was published in 2002. Hence there is no coverage whatsoever regarding digital photography. Much of what it discusses in terms of film photography does not directly apply to digital although there are ways to replicate the effects he discusses in Photoshop (assuming that one has advanced enough skills). For example, he discusses infrared and B&W films and various filters and their uses in landscape photography but digital cameras are unable to capture such shots although these effects can be replicated in Photoshop.
The much more serious problem with the book is its methodology. Under each chapter (i.e., composition, time of day, weather conditions, etc.), instead of providing general advice, the author provides between one to three photographs and provides the details of how he shot them (i.e., camera, film type, lens, aperture, etc.). Many of these shots are quite impressive but the problem is that they are very specific to the conditions surrounding the actual photographs per se. General advice regarding photography under these topics does not go beyond the information given regarding the specific photographs. Hence the reader gains little information on applying time of day or weather conditions to landscape photography. |
