The GPS head mounts on the camera hot shoe.
David G. Wilkins
On start up the unit displayed a solid green GPS lock LED in ~30 seconds which was rather surprising for first time use out of the box.

I don't know if I had a bad unit or they are all like this.

The GPS does what it should do. It records the GPS Data into the Images and works without a problem on my D5100. It can be switched on/off to save battery. GPS fix within 6-40sec.
The only annoying thing is the cable. It is way too long and I cant find any L-shaped cable that fits. If anyone knows about a L-shaped cable that fits into D5100 PLEASE let me know.

The GPS works well with a Nikon D7000.

The unit is very lightweight and sits well on top of the camera sliding onto the hot shoe. Once mounted there the pop-up flash cannot lift up. There are camera strap mounts that mimic the flash shoe which this will mount to freeing up the flash if needed. On the right-hand side of the GPS there is a mini-jack for the included wired remote control. The remote has a 36" cable and features a simple smooth feeling button which can lock to do time exposures. On the rear is the power on/off switch. On the left side is the jack for the 10" GPS data cable. There are two cables included - one with a square jack for the Nikon D90, D7000, D5000, and D3100 and a round one with lots of pins and a twist to lock for the Nicon D3S, D3X, D900, D700, D300s, D300, D2xs, D2hs, and the D200. It will also fit the Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro. I used a bit of Velcro to hold the cable to the camera strap mount which I do not use. The top of the GPS has a green LED which flashes while searching and glows solid when there is a GPS lock.

The initial GPS lock took a few minutes in my tree lined backyard. Once locked the GPS followed my movements around very well. The top LCD screen of the Nikon showed a positive lock on 9 satellites. Using the large color LCD on the back of the camera the GPS data was displayed. It's here where you set the automatic on/off of the GPS using the auto-focus sleep time. In my experience the battery last longer than I do so I left the auto on/off in the off position and will using the slide switch on the back of the GPS to turn the unit on. Once on the camera automatically logs the GPS data into the metadata of the photos (use caution if you don't want this data in your photos that you shoot around home).

Was a little weary of purchasing this because I thought it wouldn't work well because it is so cheap in comparison to the Nikon brand version. I could not have been more wrong!

This GPS works without flaw on my Nikon D3100. It picked up on a GPS signal with 30 seconds, and held onto that signal even with the camera body off. The geotags are very accurate.

The device itself is compact, and the wire length is about 8" long, but not obnoxiously long.

Couldn't be happier with the product.

THIS IS AN UPDATED REVIEW:

9/2012

I was amazed at how well this device works - or, I should say, "worked" - because a few days after starting to use it, it suddenly stopped working. Accidentally, I discovered that the cord had failed. If I held it in a specific position, it would suddenly begin to flicker and work.

Alas, a field replacement is unlikely, and the part of the trip through a desert I wanted to track isn't going to happen. The seller should offer as an option multiple cords, because you don't use devices like this in big cities with maps.

11/2012 Update:

I contacted A&R when I got back from the Middle East, and his first response was to offer to sell me a replacement cord for $16. When I said I'd return the whole GPS for a refund instead, they offered to send me a new cord for free. And a few days later, by first class mail, they did. So I am updating my review to 3 stars

The cord is definitely a weak spot, and as others have noted, it's just long enough to be annoying. Also, the shoe on the device doesn't fit very tightly on the D7000. Finally, it's a battery hog - it's a pain to keep turning it off in the field, because it needs to recapture the satellites again. But it sure does work, is very cheap, and so I gave it 3 stars.

There is a new GPS by Aokatec that has no cable and plugs directly into the GPS socket on the D7000. Twice as expensive, but probably worth the money to eliminate a cause of field failure

This is a great little unit. I received it this afternoon and it worked with my D90 right out of the box. I turned it on in my yard (Puget Sound area), and it locked onto 10 satellites in less than a minute. I have the coordinates of my location from other gps units, and this one was very close to those. Altitude was also accurate to within 3 meters. I drove around the area taking random shots, and the results were accurate. The Exif data for the image shows latitude, longitude, altitude (meters) and the number of satellites used (at least it does with my Nikon).

It lost its lock (green light starts blinking) after a few minutes on the seat of my car, but that's not surprising considering the relatively small size of the unit (= antenna). While it was blinking and re-acquiring satellites, I found that dismounting it from the camera and setting it on my car trunk helped speed up locking, though I don't know if this would work all the time. It also helped to turn the unit off and back on if it was taking a long time to re-acquire.

One nice feature is that the unit can be left on and will stay functioning even if the camera is turned off. The camera battery drain seems to be very small.

Some other reviewers complained about the long cord. I made a short loop in the cord (like winding up rope) and secured it with a small piece of black plastic electrician's tape - problem solved. It blocks the pop-up flash, of course, but you can simply dismount the unit and hold it (or let it dangle) and use the flash. Or there are simple, cheap L brackets available for external flash that you can mount the unit on while using the on-camera flash.

I already have a wired remote for my D90.
