fascinating tribute to an astonishing artist, March 5, 2008

These live performances come from different periods of Wicks's oft-disrupted career. They are highly distinctive, thought-provoking and moving. Wicks takes the music to realms the composers arguably didn't envisage, but with such compelling conviction and artistry! The Glazunov is unusually dramatic and Vaughan Williams's lark takes on the wild majesty of an eagle. "The Lark Ascending", in which otherworldly things happen with colouring and tuning, is poignant and haunting: this in itself makes the disc precious.
This disc may not be quite as obvious a first approach to Wicks's art as the Biddulph CD (Sibelius Concerto and short pieces) and the Music&Arts disc "Art of Camilla Wicks", but it's a fascinating tribute to a truly extraordinary violinist and artist.
