5.0 out of 5 stars A Hard Core Jane Austen
Although Fanny Burney has somehow managed for a long time to escape the public's eye, I'm pleased to see that she is returning in popularity...or at least her name is known. For any Austen readers out there, Burney is a harder, harsher critic of society, and, in some ways, a wittier one. I do not wish to take anything from Austen, of course, because she is a stunning...

1.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK; HORRIBLE EDITION
Jane Austin fans will love this book, too, but don't read this edition. We are asked to "forgive any missing and extraneous characters" but this book is almost impossible (or should I say impoffible) to read. Here is an example: "Her difpofition v;ti,.r/.!iM:t in'finGerity,..." (pg 67). I'm actually struggling through it as an exercise for my brain, but I've ordered a...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Hard Core Jane Austen, June 16, 1998

This review is from: Camilla (The World's Classics) (Paperback)
Although Fanny Burney has somehow managed for a long time to escape the public's eye, I'm pleased to see that she is returning in popularity...or at least her name is known. For any Austen readers out there, Burney is a harder, harsher critic of society, and, in some ways, a wittier one. I do not wish to take anything from Austen, of course, because she is a stunning writer in her own right, and believed to have legitimized the novel. Somehow, though, Burney gets left in the dust, despite Austen's mention of her in several novels, and significantly in _Northanger Abbey_. In other words, I recommend Burney as a great read for those who have the humor to take her and her critical eye of 18th century society.

I'm actually struggling through it as an exercise for my brain, but I've ordered a copy from another pubisher. The origianal book was published it several volumes and this is only Vol. 1.
