Book Description

September 1996
Story about a family of Down's Syndrome children.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

As head of the Up With Down's Syndrome Foundation for children suffering from Down's syndrome, Geraldi is a powerful advocate for the rights of the handicapped?including the right to be loved. National publicity has been garnered by the Florida couple, Camille and her pediatrician husband, who with their two daughters have opened their home to growing numbers of Down's syndrome children whom they adopt. The daily, mind-boggling routines of the Geraldis and their staff to ready the children for the day's activities exhibit a palpable philosophy of love and discipline that would disarm most skeptics. Of course, there are problems, including meager funding, as Geraldi and freelancer Burris make clear. Yet, despite the obstacles, the Geraldis give new meaning to the concept of family. An appendix includes a list of resources (national organizations, hotlines, newsletters). Photos not seen by PW.

From Booklist

A former pediatric nurse, the wife of a pediatrician, and the mother of two biological daughters, Geraldi has become the adoptive mother of 31 children with Down syndrome or neurological disorders. In the "voice" of Geraldi, Carol Burris has written this first-person account of the Florida woman's devoted career in caring for these babies and toddlers, who, in addition to mental retardation, have a spectrum of physical disorders. The book profiles some of the children and interweaves Geraldi's reflections on her motivations and rewards in her work, the incredible logistics of tending to her flock (aided by volunteers and live-in staff), and her establishment of the Up with Down Syndrome Foundation. The book helpfully covers the characteristics of Down syndrome and the benefits of a stimulating environment. Geraldi is a laudable, vocal advocate for the acceptance of children with mental and physical disabilities. Her appearance in People and on 60 Minutes will ensure popular appeal. Irene Wood

This review is from: Camille's Children: 31 Miracles and Counting (Hardcover)
This book shows the true compassion, strength, and love of Camille and her whole family. There should be more people like her. This book gives people with or without a child with special needs ways in which they can help children with Down Syndrome or any other disability. I hope that Ms.Geraldi and Ms.Burris would write another book to let us know how her wonderful family is doing.
