This review is from: Camille's Travels: or Travels Without Charley (Kindle Edition)
Plot/Storyline: 3 Stars
While the novel's opening was intriguing, I felt as though I missed something because Camille was not only already a runaway, but she had also already ridden with Phil for awhile and run away from him. Some of this was told in Camille's thoughts of the past, but there was never really a full flashback. For instance, Camille said that she ran fromPhil because he started acting weird, yet she never really gives any detailed examples. I enjoyed the portions that showed how Camille was getting by, or not, as a runaway. Those sections were very realistic, not to mention heart breaking. Camille's voice telling the story was excellent, really pulling me into the tale. The first half of the book was excellent. Unfortunately, the storyline and plot slid downhill after the first half, straight into silliness. Character Development: 4 Stars Camille was an extremely sympathetic character. Although she is forced to steal to survive at one point, and she has kleptomaniac tendencies, there is still a `goodness' about her that really comes through in her thoughts. She generated plenty of empathy throughout the book. The other characters ranged from unbelievable to downright silly. Writing Style: 4 1/4 Stars The writing style had a very nice flow and was what kept me reading that last half. I was very impressed with the rendition of the voice of Camille. Like many teenagers, she teetered on the edge of maturity, swaying back and forth, and this really showed in the narrative. The dialogue was suitable, though ordinary. The descriptions were fairly vivid. There was some awkward phrasing here and there. However, the overall sentence structure was good. Editing: 4 1/2 Stars There was an issue where a passage at the end of one chapter was repeated at the beginning of the next chapter. This appeared to be an editing issue. Rating: PG-15 for Sexual Situations and Discussions |
