Book Description

June 1, 2006
Full-color cover; illustrated with b & w photos and outline maps of the regions; bibliography.

Camino Chronicle: Walking to Santiago takes the reader along the ancient pilgrimage trail, the Camino de Santiago, as the author and her husband travel 400 miles through northern Spain's hamlets, cities, arid plains, and mountains. The book combines intriguing historical background and rich cultural stories with the author's engaging narrative to provide travelers with the inspiration and knowledge to make their own journey to the city of Santiago de Compostela and the famous cathedral where the remains of the apostle St. James are found.

Not everyone has the time or inclination to walk five-hundred miles across northern Spain, but whether armchair traveler or active adventurer, readers will find that Camino Chronicle provides a realistic, non-embellished account of what such a trip involves. You'll gain a picture of refugio (hostel) life, learn about the food and wine of the regions, and enjoy reading some of the mythology and customs of the people.

Editorial Reviews

Review

When Susan Alcorn together with her husband Ralph leaves her Californian home to walk the Camino Francés from Roncesvalles to Santiago in September 2001, she does so with the intention of having an interesting vacation with the added benefit of improved physical fitness. ... [Camino Chronicle] is also a direct result of her Camino experience. Initially thinking it hadn't affected her much at all, her outlook changed greatly between the time of walking and writing the book in 2005/2006. Susan shares her experience by using her journal entries from the walk. These are divided into regional sections. Each section begins with a map of Spain and the Camino, highlighting the relevant part, plus a list of towns and the mileages between them. With the first-timer in mind, she adds very useful information on how to prepare for the Camino. Among them are a packing list, and a comprehensive action plan of preparing for a longer stay away from home. Answers to frequently asked questions, a short chapter with statistics about the modern day pilgrims, and a comprehensive bibliography complete the book. The result is a book that will mainly appeal to (American) people who haven't walked the Camino as it provides practical information combined with the experience of Susan's walk, and it details the rich history of the pilgrimage. Angelika Schneider --Confraternity of Saint James, London, England Bulletin 95, September 2006

From the Author

In some respects walking the Camino is much the same as any other long hike: there are both physical demands and mental challenges, but walking the Camino is also quite different from other hikes because of its unique history and its cultural setting.

Long-distance hiking is not just about the blisters and the uncertainty of where you'll find food each day, it's also about the motivation and self-discipline to keep going when you'd just as soon not roll out of bed. But as I was learning to deal with the everyday challenges of where to find shelter and so forth, I took comfort in the fact that millions had traveled along the path before--that anything that is part of the human experience had occurred there: birth, death, war, crime, compassion, bravery, love….It was a strange juxtaposition: my immediate needs and sense of their importance and the knowledge that I was no more significant than one of the millions of rocks along the way (or stars above).

Walking the Camino de Santiago was an empowering experience. I learned that I could set, and attain, goals far beyond what I had ever before considered. And, in the five weeks of walking, I had ample time to consider the oft-said, oft-ignored phrase "live in the moment." I learned that when I followed that advice, the trail provided all that I needed to succeed.

The mystique behind the ancient trail is based on this reality: it has changed the lives of millions.

More About the Author

I was born in Oregon, but have lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for most of my life. I love it here! Since we have moderate weather pretty much year round, we can hike year round. And, luckily, we have regional, state, and Federal parks where we can enjoy nature and keep in shape.
Ever since I retired from teaching elementary school in 2001 (at age 60), Ralph and I have been hiking more and more. We have now backpacked more than 2,600 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail (goes through California, Oregon, and Washington), completing it in 2010. We've also completed almost 2,000 miles of Camino trails in Spain, France, and Portugal, as well as climbed Kilimanjaro and backpacked the circuit "O" route in Torres del Paine National Park, Chile (Patagonia). We think that hiking is very good for us--physically and mentally. We intend to continue as long as we can!

5.0 out of 5 stars Experience the Camino de Santiago, June 13, 2006
This review is from: Camino Chronicle: Walking to Santiago (Paperback)
Camino Chronicle is the day-to-day narrative of Susan and Ralph Alcorn's hike across northern Spain on the Camino de Santiago in 2001. I found the book to be well written, interesting, and enjoyable.
The book breaks the Camino de Santiago into five Regions, each of which starts with a map and mileage chart. It is an excellent book for anyone who is thinking of walking the Camino. It gives the reader a feel for what it is like to be on the trail and what to expect on a day-to-day basis.
In addition to the day-to-day narrative of the hike, Susan includes the history/legends of the Camino de Santiago, along with other interesting information and essays about this area of Spain.
Susan and Ralph Alcorn are experienced hikers/backpackers and the book provides a lot of good information on how to prepare for an extended trip of this type, and equipment needed. Susan also has a FAQ section in the book that will be helpful to anyone thinking of hiking the Camino de Santiago.
My wife and I hiked the Camino de Santiago from St. Jean Pied de Port, France to Santiago, Spain in 2003. We returned for a second trip in 2005. Camino Chronicle brought back the great memories we have of the pilgrimage.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of doing the Camino de Santiago, or the armchair pilgrim interested in a good adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Camino - A Call to Awaken, June 14, 2006
This review is from: Camino Chronicle: Walking to Santiago (Paperback)
The 'Camino Chronicle' is a courageously honest account of one pilgrim's walk to Santiago. Written in diary format it touches on her daily challenges along the path. From overcoming the physical pain of blisters and aching muscles to facing loneliness and self doubts. Will I find a bed at the end of the day? What is my intention for walking the Camino and will it be sufficient to obtain a Compostela? Coming to terms with the difficult decision to take a bus from Leon to Ponferrada and having to say good-bye to friends made along the way. The frustration of not being able to communicate in Spanish.

This highly personal account is interwoven with a sketch of the bloodstained history of the Camino from the beheading of St. James and his miraculous appearance to lead the Christian Reconquest of Spain from the Muslim's, earning him the ignominious title - 'Slayer of the Moors'. In between we have glimpses of yet more massacres of Charlemagne and Roland, the Inquisition, the Spanish civil war, Guernica, the ETA, the Madrid train bombing. Midway through the pilgrimage comes 9/11 and the agony of this American struggling to come to terms with this latest atrocity and the seemingly endless cycle of violence.

And then come the insights provided by fellow pilgrims, ' I don't go very fast; hurrying seems to be opposite of the lesson of the trail.' and her own pleasure in finding the opportunity, 'To go within and meditate on life.' These references remind me of 'Peace Is Every Step' by Thich Nhat Hanh which emphasises the need for all pilgrims to walk in a way that only prints peace and serenity on the Earth for then we work for all humankind and its healing. This makes a wonderful compendium and the 2 together warrant a 5 star read. John Brierley - www.caminoguides.com

3.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to the experience of being a pilgrim, August 2, 2007
This review is from: Camino Chronicle: Walking to Santiago (Paperback)
I had heard a podcast interview with Susan about the Camino and read her website, so my expectations for the book were very high. I think it does a good job of laying out the experiences of being a pilgrim and the unique one of being on the Way during 9/11. She is complete in her descriptions and the book is well laid out.
Having just read a few Camino books so far I think they fall into three categories: Logistical descriptions that help you with day to day planning, Historical anthologies that explain the importance of the Camino and its various sites, and personal accounts of individuals experiences.
Camino Chronicle is the later and a balanced book to read.
