It's a deal and it's as good as any other cast iron dutch oven I've used. Bake some good bacon fat into it to amend the factory seasoning and you've got yourself a winner. The lid has legs on it too which helps when you want to use it as a skillet. I got 2 friends to buy it and another sale through one of those friends, it's contagious, especially when you compare the value to other ovens.

This is my first dutch oven. My internet research found that a lot of people seem to have either Lodge or Camp Chef cast-iron on all the camping forums. I picked this one because I like the lid that doubles as a griddle and also because the price was better than Lodge. I do like that Lodge is made in the U.S., but I wish they were more competitively priced. A 12 quart lodge dutch oven was double the cost of this one. And as I said, I like the legs on the Camp Chef lid.
I was afraid that 12 quarts might be too big, but the lid actually accounts for about 3 of those quarts, so the pot is only about 9 quarts which is a perfect size for me. It was pre-seasoned and the first thing I made was a cobbler. Clean up was easy. After cleaning I heated it on my grill to dry it and then rubbed some more oil all over it. A few days later I wanted to test how well the lid worked as a griddle. The legs on the lid let me sit it right on the coals and I made some bacon and eggs. I cooked the bacon first and the lid held a whole pound of it. After that I drained the bacon grease and fried a half dozen eggs and there was no trouble with sticking. Again, clean up was a breeze. While still warm I wiped it out with some water and a small scrub brush. Re-oiled it and it's ready for my next meal.

If you enjoy camping then Dutch oven cooking is a treat. I received this oven as a gift and have enjoyed it thoroughly. I've used Lodge ovens as well, and the advantage this has over a Lodge is the lid. There are three feet on the lid so the lid can be placed upside-down on coals and used as a skillet! Wonderful for cooking breakfast.
I've cooked chicken and rice, cobbler, and biscuits in this oven and it has performed beautifully. For "car camping" this can't be beat. Even my children have enjoyed cooking in this oven - it's a family affair!

An American Classic Cook Pot,

I received my Camp Chef 12-qt Dutch oven last evening at dusk...Fed Ex was running a little late! I was only a little disappointed that I didn't get the Lewis & Clark commemorative version I ordered, but am just as happy with the Grand Canyon picture cast in the lid. This pot is exactly what I've been wanting for my ultimate survival tool. If the electricity goes out, the propane runs out, and I'm forced to 'BUG OUT', then this little oven will be my 'kitchen' in the wilderness. I allows me to cook all the meat and vegetables, stews, stovetop-type griddle breakfast, and most of all, fresh bread, over an open wood fire. Wood is something I have plenty of at my little retreat in east King County, WA. The main reason I bought this oven is that I could not figure out any good way to cook bread of any kind in the wilderness without getting a large wood-burning oven or buying one of these little fold-up camp ovens that I wasn't too thrilled with. I'm good at whipping up Bisquick biscuits, even in a covered frying pan in a pinch, but I wanted a way to cook REAL bread, the kind you can make a sandwich out of. This oven will do that! I scrubbed the factory oil off it just now, rinsed it thoroughly, and then rubbed the entire surface of the pot and lid with a dish towel soaked in bacon grease and cooking oil.
This is all you need to keep cast iron from rusting...just a little oil left on it after use. My Mom saw the new Camp Chef and said 'That's just like my grandmother had in her kitchen, except someone sawed off the legs so they could use it on the stove-top and ruined it'. Well, I don't plan to saw off the legs. They look great and isolate the heat of the pot from whatever you set it on and also allow you to keep hot coals under it. The lid, with its own legs, is just as advertised and fits perfectly on the pot for a tight seal. I'm sure you can move the lid over its own heat source and have two cooking vessels for the camp kitchen. I plan to buy the lid rack for this purpose as well as the tripod with chain to hang the pot over the fire with. You also get a handy lid-lifter tool in the package as well as a 'Dutch Oven Cooking Guide' and a catalog of other Camp Chef items. This Dutch Oven and I plan to grow old together and prepare many delicious concoctions around our cozy mountaintop campfire. Now I have to practice...

I am disappointed in the product mainly because it was made in China. I have no idea of what they used to "cure" it with and plan on sand blasting/buring it off before we cook in it. I will research products much better in the future.

We have two other Camp Chef Dutch Ovens but in smaller sizes. Christmas dinner was prime rib made in this well seasoned oven and turned out perfectly. We couldn't be more pleased with this purchase.

I purchased this for my MIL as a Christmas present. She used it during their camping trip the week after Christmas. She loves it! She likes the fact that the lid doubles as a frying pan.
