5.0 out of 5 stars Rap for the soul November 15, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Heard about this first on NPR. As a young black male from the middle class, I never identified with the "ghetto" black hood guy, nor was I some affluent rich person. I was always just me. A guy who liked a little bit of everything. Yet always felt the same degree of ostracism from both groups, blacks and whites. Yeah, the lyrics of this guy may not be on the same plain of established fulltime rappers but his his message is the realest I've ever heard in the genre. Cop it. Support this type of rap. That can uplift, relate, and inspire, while still being catchy, provocative and edgy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, unexpectedly dope. November 16, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
Man, I've known Donald Glover has been rhyming for a while under this monicker, but I wasn't immediately ready to see what it was about, kind of just writing it off as another actor trying to go into another area they don't belong.

Man, I was super wrong. This is one of the best hip hop albums of the year. This is the first time I've ever written a review for anything on Amazon, that's how much it compelled me to sing it's praises. It's funny, heartfelt, genuine, and hard as nails with some of the bars he spits. I was honestly shocked at his rhyme skills and then to find out he produced the entire thing? Crazy. Nothing but praise for this project.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible! November 15, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Camp is hands down the best hip-hop album of 2011. It's so different from the standard hip hop album (which usually consists of 2 good songs between 10 awful tracks). Each track is extremely well produced, with diverse beats and intense lyrics.

The overall flow of the album is excellent. It feels as though it is telling a loose story, with the monologue at the end of the final track being a fitting conclusion to the album.

In conclusion, if you are looking for something unique and heartfelt, buy this album! You will not regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Takes a Step Above Most Other Albums December 2, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
Now let me say that I enjoy hip-hop, rap, and pretty much every other genre, but this takes it to the next level without getting overly political or expounding on too many civil issues. The bar has been raised not just for hip-hop, but for current lyricism, and I think it's incredible that CG started rapping as an efficient way to get some use out of his amazing beats and it's turned into THIS (and three other free albums).

The only other rap album that I was similarly surprised by, despite the fact that I've disliked the guy, was Kanye's MBDTF - and Camp is far more self-aware and emotive than that. And even if you expect a lot out of CG he'll still floor you.

I'll say that CG sometimes uses vulgar language and terms that you might find offensive (talks about sex, hooking up, etc). If you can't look past that and see why he says what he does then move on, but if you are typically bothered by these things but still want to check him out here's a legitimate album to challenge your sensibilities: if you're offended by a song, listen to it again. Some of CG's lyrics touch on glimmers of truth in all our lives that no recent artist has seemed to express so well, and some are just his stream of consciousness and may be "childish", but who cares? Its all entertaining in a way that's lost with most performers today.

As a mixed guy, I felt some of his lyrics about never fitting in with the two classically identified American races hit me a little harder than I was expecting, but I've realized that that's a great and powerful thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!! November 15, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
What makes this album so amazing is its diversity. Gambino has taken things he has learned from all his previous mixtapes, EP's and albums and found the perfect balance. It has his intense rapping, his vulnerable singing and is most importantly extremely catchy and intellignet. Each track has major re-listen value and the the albums ending, a four minute spoken word story from his childhood, is the most perfect ending to an album i've ever heard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable! November 29, 2011
By Farts
Format:Audio CD
Wow. That's the first word that came to mind every time another track ended on this album.

Donald Glover is a genius. It's that simple. He does not fail at anything that he attempts. It may take him a couple tries, but he always gets there. This album is plain incredible. Besides Kanye West's brilliant album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, no other hip-hop album comes close to this kind of heartfelt honesty. The lyrical content tells a great story. It's not just another rapper singing about generic topics, ruining all sense of musical talent with autotune. It is a journey that Gambino walks you through, holding your hand the whole way.

From the brutal "Bonfire" to the heartfelt "Kids", Childish Gambino gives you strong insight into his true feelings.

Considering Childish is a professional comedian, it's not wonder this album is so clever and, at times, hilarious. He borrows lines from his stand up routines and previous sketches and shows on occasion. For those of us who are familiar with everything this man does, it is a joy to hear him succeed on all levels while paying homage to his past.

The amount of things he succeeds on with this record is very high, but the underlying topic most spoken of is race. He takes us through his life story with strong narratives on how the color of his skin affected his life. It gives an insiders perspective on the tragedies and hardships experienced by youth minorities in America.

After listening to this record straight through for the first time, I felt like I had made a new friend. This is the most personal album possibly ever written. The connection felt with Gambino, Donald, Donglover, whatever you wish to call him, is undeniable. The epilogue to the album on "That Power" is the epitome of this.
