Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

A captivating, timeless classic for the libraries of all hikers, campers, and lovers of the outdoors

First published in 1881, this complete illustrated guide reveals how to catch everything from squirrels and mice to tigers and bears, and offers general advice on camping and hiking in the woods. Among the treasures within are easy-to-follow plans for building dozens of traps; comprehensive directions for the building of shanties and log cabins, and boats and canoes; hints on food and cooking utensils; instructions for the curing and tanning of hides; and much, much more, including these indispensable tidbits of advice:

• Smear oil of cumin on the trail of a wolf to lure him to the trap.

• Repel mosquitoes with oil from a pennyroyal plant’s leaves.

• Do not “calculate very confidently on securing a fox on the first attempt.”

• Combat a skunk’s odor with chloride of lime.

• Use a rabbit’s special fondness for salt to entice it into a trap.

• Make homemade flypaper out of molasses or spruce gum.

1.0 out of 5 stars Most Disappointing August 27, 2010
By J. Ray
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I saw a copy of this on line and was impressed, so I ignored the other low rating, but the book I received was very disappointing; more so than any other book I've ever purchased. Don't buy this one, look at some of the other versions that have pictures and illustrations as this one is worthless with out them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Make sure you get the right edition! June 2, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Other reviewers have complained that there are no illustrations. Without them, the book is nearly useless because the author often uses drawings and illustrations to explain how his traps and snares work. Having checked this book out at my local library, I can say for a fact that ISBN 9781599218038 (Lyons Press second edition 2009 - Paperback) is well illustrated. This review is for that specific copy, as I have not seen any other versions. This book looks like it will make an excellent addition to any primitive studies or survival library. just make sure to get the right version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Camping Classic January 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
For those who like Nessmuk and Kephart and old school camping, this one is on par with them. Then add in some great new (old?) trap designs that I have never seen before, and this from someone who has ALL of the Fur Fish and Game bookstore manuals from the 20's. This is a huge value on kindle.
