I bought this album for the song "Best Friend" and because once upon a time, I knew all these traditional camp songs. In the 22 years since I served as a camp counselor I've forgotten most of them and now I have a brand new baby granddaughter to sing them to, so it's time to relearn! Not to mention 2 very good friends that were on staff with me and will love to sing these with their kids. And in the car, when no one is around... although it's marketed as a kid's album, if you love whimsy and have happy summer camp memories like I do, you'll enjoy it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Oh, boy..., June 15, 2009
This review is from: Camp Lisa (Audio CD)
I have been a rabid fan of Lisa's since her first album, and unlike others who've wandered away from her, I've stayed loyal. I own every one of her releases, including singles, and I see her every time I get the chance--and have even brought my kids to see her perform. They, too, have long enjoyed her music, and "Catch the Moon" has been a staple in our house through three kids' preschool years--as well as a frequent gift for friends and relatives.

When I first heard Lisa was working on this CD, I was very excited, seeing it as a natural extension of "Moon" and a natural fit for my now older and camp-happy kids. So, I didn't hesitate to purchase it, without hearing so much as a song. I knew I'd like it, and I knew my kids would, too.

Man, was I wrong.

The minute I popped the CD on in the car, my son--who even has a bit of a crush on Lisa and will listen to her music even though he normally won't listen to "girl" music as he gets older--and I both had the same reaction: we cringed. We couldn't get through the corny first song and began fast forwarding, amazed as they got worse, not better. He finally begged me to turn it off, and I did, intent on trying it out on my daughters, ages 8 and 3.

In fairness, they like the CD--no, they love it. But then, they'll listen to Barney, the Wiggles, and those annoying kids who sing on the Kidz Bop and Mommy and Me CDs. As a stay-at-home dad, no one is more grateful than I am for the "family music" phenomenon, since it allows me to play the likes of Ralph's World, the Sippy Cups, and yes, Lisa Loeb and Liz Mitchell, rather than that annoying stuff. But "Camp Lisa" is, after repeated listens, just as bad and perhaps worse than Barneyesque music. And worse, since one of the main things I've always liked most about Lisa is the strength of her songs, is that these aren't good at all. She's using writing partners, and maybe that's the problem. But the results are bad--really bad.

I feel awful bagging on Lisa like this, since I've met her on several occasions and, like I said, have followed her through thick and thin. I also realize that she's donating a portion of the proceeds from sales to charity. But still, I can't sit and listen to this for those reasons alone. It's too painful!

That Kay Hanley (Letters to Cleo), Jill Sobule, and even Steve Martin are involved with this project makes it even more of a train wreck. After "Moon," it should have--and could have--been great. But sadly, it's not even good. Maybe next time, Lisa.

5.0 out of 5 stars We love Lisa Loeb!, February 18, 2009
This review is from: Camp Lisa (Audio CD)
You just can't go wrong with Lisa Loeb kids songs! We first heard "Catch the Moon" 4 years ago on t.v. My daughter (then 1 1/2 yrs, and I would dance to the video (which we had to record!) and sing. She would then request that I sing it to her at bedtime. 'Catch the Moon' has always been a favorite. We recently bought the book to accompany the song. When I saw Camp Lisa, there was no question we HAD to have it. This is the BEST CD!!! We listen to it constantly in the car and it is one the parents never get tired of. My 5 1/2 year old memorized all the songs within a week or two. Great vocals, great songs! Thanks Lisa!
