Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The author and her husband as illustrator both make debuts in this book, the story of an overnight outing. The warmth and mutual caring by members of an attractive family are conveyed in Maynard's blithe narrative. Audrey and her young brother Charlie help stow gear into the station wagon that Dad is tying the canoe onto, while Mom carries Baby Willy and a picnic basket to the laden vehicle. Then they're off to the lake, where everyone exults in dining al fresco, canoe rides, fishing, etc. During the night, Dad and Audrey calm Charlie's fears of shadows; when morning comes, everyone is set for the return trip after a breakfast of luscious blueberry pancakes. Bethel's color paintings in vivid, realistic colors are more impressive depictions of the bucolic locale and camping gear than they are of people who seem rather wooden, as they do not in the text.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3 A family with three children goes to an island where they meet friends and have a one night Camp-out. After dinner, it is bedtime and one child shows fear about shadows and the dark. Morning starts with pancakes, followed by fishing, catching frogs and swimming before packing to leave. Finally, they all ham it up for a group picture to remind them of the trip. The idea of a family camping story for young children is good, but the presentation is less than inspiring. Too much is packed into a one-night visit, and the writing is choppy and undeveloped in the rush to include everything. Also , it is hard to get to know eight people in such a short space . The illustrations are of no help in identifying characters, who are all of similar structure . All are equally unattractive; they look more like rough clay sculptures stressing muscles and body form than finished drawings of people. Both text and illustrations are more of a rough draft of an idea that needs more shaping and polishing than a finished story for a young audience. Nancy A. Gifford, Schenectady County Public Library, N.Y.

More About the Author

I've been a writer all my life. Over those years, I've worked as a newspaper reporter, columnist, radio commentator (I was Liberal-of-the-Day on CBS radio at the age of 19, on a show called Spectrum) . For eight years, I published a syndicated column about my life called "Domestic Affairs", but when my life got increasingly complicated (I got divorced) and my children grew to the age where it was no longer a good idea to write about them, I ended the column and turned to writing fiction. One of my novels, To Die For, was made into a terrific movie, directed by Gus van Sant , in which I can be seen in the role of Nicole Kidman's lawyer.

My memoir, At Home in the World, published in 1998, engendered a fair amount of controversy at the time of its publication --still does, in some quarters.

In recent years, I've published a true crime story--Internal Combustion, and two more novels--The Usual Rules and a young adult novel, The Cloud Chamber, as well as a number of essays that can be found in various collections. (Read over the titles--aging, divorce, anorexia, miscarriage, disastrous midlife dating--and you may get a picture of my life, I suppose, though a number of the more cheerful aspects --more enjoyable to live through, but less good as material--would be missing.

My latest book is the novel, Labor Day--just published in July 2009. I'll be on the road for a while, sharing that one with readers. You can learn more about the novel, and my tour schedule (also my writing workshops on Lake Atitlan, in Guatemala) on my website, www.joycemaynard.com
