Great contemporary account,
This review is from: Life and Campaigns of Stonewall Jackson (Hardcover)
This book is a great way to delve into the life and campaigns of Gen'l Jackson. Written by a member of Jackson's staff, this book not only explains and details Thomas Jackson's life, but of his deep Calvinist Christian life. Very detailed accounts of Jackson's battles, with a few maps to help the text, this book is highly recommended.

Life and Campaigns of Stonewall Jackson (Battlefield Evangelism) This is among the best of the biographies of Jackson. One of the things that makes it so enjoyable is the fact that it was published the year after the war ended and the contempoary attitude of the South is clearly expressed by the author. As an example, toward the end of the preface he makes reference to the oath that he had to take to the federal government as a Confederate:
"I have voluntarily sworn to obey the government of the United States, as at present established and expounded to us by force of arms. That oath it is my purpose to keep. The Federal agent who administered it to me taught me expressly that its obligation was of this extent, and no more: that it did not bind me to think or say the principles on which I had acted were erroneous; but to abstain, in future, from the assertion of them by force of arms." Just as you can "feel" the rebellion in that quote you can feel it throughout the remainder of the book. If you want to see Confederate thinking on things like secession and slavery during that time period this is the book to read. The author shares a religious perspective with General Jackson and has great love and respect for him. You are not well read on Jackson if you have not read this biography.

I am just now picking up momentum on this book. So far the book is excellent and provides a key insight into what this man was all about, namely, a disciple of Jesus Christ. The book intrigues me not only because I enjoy Civil War history (loved the move Gods and Generals), but also because the author Dabney, was a contemporary of Jackson.
