3.0 out of 5 stars Hold out for a better HVLP
I've had this unit for a couple of years now...and in short it's priced fairly. Not too great but not too bad. It got me started with HVLP. It just does not have enough power for shooting any thick (even kinda thick) finish. If you just want to shoot waterborne poly it works fine.

I've had this unit for a couple of years now...and in short it's priced fairly. Not too great but not too bad. It got me started with HVLP. It just does not have enough power for shooting any thick (even kinda thick) finish. If you just want to shoot waterborne poly it works fine.

I wanted to shoot paint and oil based poly. For paint, forget it. Even with the heavy needle it just shoots splatter. For oil based poly it can't shoot a smooth even finish. With the heavy needle in it you get orange peel.

It was a good intro machine for me, but I ended up going for the top end
Accuspray on the second go round. Triple the price but you get professional results (why waste your time spraying if you get sub-par results?) and 3M's PPS which makes clean up a breeze. You know it's hard to justify the price for an expensive unit but think how many hours you have into your project. Why risk an average finish on it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great bang for the buck!, January 28, 2006
This review is from: Campbell Hausfeld HV2500 58 CFM Fine Finish HVLP Paint Sprayer (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have tried HVLP conversion guns in the past...Well, cheapy ones and was left dissapointed. A bathroom project that consisted of spraying a significant amount of Urethane and a bathtub with Acrylic polyurethane was on my list so I needed an HVLP and decided I wanted a turbine. Not wanting to invest alot of money I did a tremendous amount of research and decided on the HV2500. Although it is only a 2 stage unit I was satisfied with the specs and decided to give it a try. This unit comes with a fine and general fluid set. For an affordable $15 I bought a thick coatings fluid set should I attempt latex.

I used the Fine fluid set for the clear urethane which came out fantastic with great atomization and no runs. For the white Acrylic Polyurethane on the bathtub I used the general fluid set with satisfactory results. I got some orange peel but I blame that more on lack of experience than I do the HVLP itself. I need more practice spraying and getting the settings just right. The gun is reasonably easy to clean and should last a while so long as your not using this commercially. The unit comes with a 25' hose which is great to afford you the ability to keep the unit far away from the spraying vacinity and since they sound like vacuum cleaners the farther away the noise the better.

Overall if your looking for a decent HVLP with good parts availability at a really good price, give the HV2500 a try. It may suprise you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great HVLP Sprayer, June 21, 2006
This review is from: Campbell Hausfeld HV2500 58 CFM Fine Finish HVLP Paint Sprayer (Tools & Home Improvement)
Bought the CH HV2500 to paint all the cabinets in my house. Had never used a sprayer before. Took me six days to prepare the cabinets (remove hardware, wash, sand, prime, tape off face etc), and only about three hours to spray the whole job, 62 cabinets. I sprayed acrylic latex. The hardest part was in getting this thick paint thinned down to the correct viscosity. I also used Floetrol to help the latex lay flat. Once I discovered the correct mix, the CH HV2500 put on a mirror-like finish. I am very happy with this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars great hvlp sprayer, February 23, 2006
This review is from: Campbell Hausfeld HV2500 58 CFM Fine Finish HVLP Paint Sprayer (Tools & Home Improvement)
we've been waiting to purchase an hvlp sprayer and have been experimenting with much more pricey outfits (1,000-2,000)We were in a pinch and decided to buy this outfit because we needed one asap. we figured it would hold us over till we could get one of the outfits we had been looking at purchasing. what a surprise! this is a great hvlp. we've used it numerous times now. no hassle to set up. no hassle to use. no hassle to clean. the hose is great for getting behind larger pieces and the spray flow is perfect to use with lacquer or poly. (although the 2 stage won't accomodate paint) we are so happy with it that we are going to stick with this one!

It takes practice to achieve great results to this system. The manual is very poor. I would not consider purchasing a cheaper system.

I'm spraying latex which needs to be thinned with water to look like chocolate milk. I also add Flotrol to help level out the finish. Don't expect to be spraying like an expert on your first try. However, after my third or fourth attempt I was happy. I'm assuming the finish will only improve as I get familiar with thinning paint and using the system.

The finish looks great but the application of paint seems to take forever. It does beat using brushes and/or rollers. There is hardly any overspray. I'm using it to spray custom cabinets/tables, etc.

...no one said finishing would be easy...this just makes it a little easier...

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Product, Huge Time Saver, May 2, 2005

I used this product to stain a buddy's fence and deck, finished in 4 hours what would have taken days to do with a brush or roller. Little bit of overspray but not bad, good options for adjusting spray amount and air pressure. Easy to clean up, fairly light weight, I'm already looking for more projects to use it on. 1000 times more fun than using a brush.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great System - Great price, April 16, 2008
This review is from: Campbell Hausfeld HV2500 58 CFM Fine Finish HVLP Paint Sprayer (Tools & Home Improvement)
I am a professional finish carpenter and I do painting on the side (cabinet work, trim, etc). I have used a variety of HVLP sprayers and this unit, does just fine with all types of finishes when used properly. I have all the needle/nozzle sets (all purpose, thin and thick material) and I have no complaints when spraying various finishes (stains, latex, water/oil based clear-coats). The trick is knowing which tip to use and how to thin the material properly. When done right, this unit certainly gets the job done.

4.0 out of 5 stars Product Good, Customer Service Lousy, May 8, 2007
This review is from: Campbell Hausfeld HV2500 58 CFM Fine Finish HVLP Paint Sprayer (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've only used the HV2500 sprayer a couple of times and it worked fine, although I wish the gun was made of metal instead of plastic. My real issue is with Campbell Hausfeld's customer service. The QD (quick disconnect) was missing from my sprayer. Since I needed one immediately, I drove 20 miles to their nearest dealer and shelled out $13.62 from my own pocket for one. Even though my sprayer was now complete, I decided to test CH's customer service - I called their customer service line and explained that my QD was missing and that I needed one ASAP. That was at least 4 weeks ago and I still have no QD (from them). I have followed up with several emails directly to the customer service rep I spoke to and have gotten no response. Because of the lousy customer service, I can't recommend their products.

While this may not be the best HVLP on the market I give it 5 stars because I was able to very easily do exactly want I wanted to with it.

I had never used anything like this before but I decided to give it a try with the kitchen cabinets that I was building. I was very apprehensive about my ability to use it correctly, but I was actually amazed at how smooth of a finish I was able to get with it. A professional job could not look any better...

I used this solely with Minwax oil based satin finish polyurethane, which was of the correct viscosity straight out of the can.

I consider the cleanup of the gun to be much easier than cleaning out a paint brush, even though I used an oil based product with it.

As far as over spray goes, there still will be quite a bit, so cover everything up well around the area you are spraying in.

If you are debating on whether to spray or not, and you have a lot of material to cover, I would highly recommend using this sprayer, as I know that it saved me many days of brushing and I would have never got as smooth of a job without this.
