This is a great and healthy soup right out of the can. Make it even better. Add one can of crab and one can of diced tomato's along with 2 cans of Campbell's Select Harvest Light Maryland-Style Crab Soup, add a salad, and you have a meal that will feed up to 4 people.

Goodness I can't believe some of these reviews. How much crab does one expect to find in an inexpensive canned soup product usually found for under a buck and a half? There are enough bits to make the soup taste like crab and you get to eat a couple of small chunks usually left on the bottom. The spice is well done and there is a nice mix of vegetables. There are only 160 calories in the can, and 44% of the daily value for potassium, and not so much sodium (they use reduced sodium sea salt and potassium chloride). I eat at least a couple of cans a week and have never had heartburn from this soup. There's nothing so unusual about this soup that would cause heartburn. It's just a bit spicier than most bland canned soups.

I am seriously considering starting a petition to bring back the old recipe! I'm glad so many reviewers here agree with me :) The new recipe is sub-par in comparison. If you purchase from Amazon you not receive the one pictured. You will receive the "new improved" recipe, which as you can read from other reviewers, isn't so "improved".

Of all the light or healthy versions of canned soups by Campbell's (and others, too), this is my favorite. True, I happen to like most things that are Mexican in flavor, so that's a factor. But after sampling some "diet-friendly" soups that were bland or boring or heavy on the celery flavor (hate that), this was a lovely change.

I've made sure to keep it stocked in my pantry for over a year now.

It's tomatoey brothy, it's got black beans and chicken and rice, but it's not stew-like. It still has plenty of broth, so it's adaptable. I tend to sprinkle some low-fat cheddar on top to add to the flavor and texture. Some days, I'll open a can of black beans and add it for more fiber. When I want to splurge, I add more beans, corn, low fat cheese and a tiny dollop of lite sour cream.

If you have leftover veggies and rice, you can thicken it into a stew. I've done it, and it works.

Some info: One cup has 130 calories. It has 480 mg of sodium per serving, and 2 g of fat--one of those saturated--plus 2 grams of fiber and 8 grams of protein.

This is just a fun soup and tasty and a winner from Campbell's. I hope it stays in their line permanently.

A note: The convenient microwavable can version of this doesn't taste as good. It probably has to do with it being cooked IN the can in the nuker, maybe, not sure. But I did notice it tasted "tinny" in that other packaging. I'd recommend THIS can and cooking in a non-reactive pot (ie, stainless steel), because this broth is very tomatoey.

Enjoy.
Mir

Pretty much what you taste is...salty brothiness. But there is white meat chicken and a decent amount of both carrots and rice. I find this soup is helpful as a hunger stopgap when I'm trying to cut my calories. It's not hugely flavorful, but it's hot and has few calories and little fat, so it's okay.

I also think it's fine with a sandwich for a soup-n-sandwich type lunch on those days when I'm sick of a tomato-based soup (which tend to be more flavorful, frankly).

If you don't like a salty taste, this is not for you. Despite lower salt content than regular Campbell's, it still tastes hugely salty to me.

I think of it as a soupy tool to manage my crazy appetite. Some days. :)

Enjoy.

No flavor at all. No heat. No salt. No chicken. Nothing. At first, I thought I had a massive stroke but, no, this soup doesn't taste like anything. And I counted FOUR pieces of cubed chicken breast. No wonder people under 30 don't eat canned soup anymore. Seriously, if you have to add a ton of jalapenos, lime, salt, pepper, and chicken, you may as well make your own damn soup from scratch. I'm going back to red-and-white label Campbell's Bean & Bacon which they haven't managed to screw up. Yet.

Boy oh boy, does the Internet hate Campbell's Maryland Style Crab Soup. I'll be the first to give this gem five stars.

It's hard for me to get excited about soup. I only bought it on a whim because it was discounted, and I've been on a crab-kick here lately. (Crab pasta for lunch in fact!)

The aroma of the soup is unlike I've smelled from.. well, any canned soup. I noted that there were a lot of whole pieces of corn, veggies, and white stubs I though were crab.
No such luck! Those were potatoes. Indeed, I was at a loss trying to find any crab at all!

The broth has a slightly spicy flavor. Not the kind that leaves you huffing for air, but rather the kind you get a slightly snuffly nose after finishing the bowl. Personally it was the perfect "heat" for me- it might be too tame for others.

I hopped on the Internet right after finishing it to see what else Campbell's had... because I sure was impressed! I'll definitely be trying out the "Harvest" line of soups they have next time I hit the grocery store.

Just one gripe: it's not filling for a man who has a bottomless stomach. (Don't all men?)
I suppose if you want something filling, go for beef or pork based soups instead!
