Good hidden object/adventure fusion,
By Leslie H. Basden (California) - See all my reviews

This is an engrossing hidden object/adventure mixture in which some objects found must be used by the player in order to move ahead in the game. The hidden object portions are as good as any I've seen, in that all the objects are large enough to see but hidden well enough to be challenging. There are also mini-games to be played from time to time.
Many HOG games tend to be quite short such that nearly the entire game can be played within a free trial period, but such is not the case with this one. I thought it was a good length. If you need help to figure out what to do next, the game has a very good hint system. Another problem with typical HOGs is that they are often so easy as to be completely boring, but again, that is not the case here. The game kept this middle-aged casual gamer engrossed for long enough to be worth the money. There appears to be a slow progression in HOGs toward adding more "adventure" style puzzles, a very welcome change. A game has to be outstanding to get a 5 vote from me, so I gave it a 4. Other games in this mixed genre include Mystery Case Files: Return to Ravenhearst (which is a 5 game), the recent Department 42 (a 4 game), and the Magic Encyclopedia games (a 5 game). If you get stuck, walkthroughs are available online.

I bought this game based on the fact I enjoyed playing the free demo and that the game had gotten good reviews (both on this site and elsewhere). I wasn't disappointed in the beauty of the game nor the scare factor. The scenes are beautifully rendered. It is a spooky, creepy game as well, and there were a few times the game made me jump in my seat. It is also a nice mix of hidden object and puzzle games. However, I did have some minor technical difficulties with the game slowing down and almost freezing at points. And my biggest complaint is that it was incredibly short! There are only three changes in location. The story is not well-developed, due in part to the game's length. If they had added more to the story line and added additional locations it would have been much better.
Overall - fun, but not worth the money unless you can find it for about half what it's listed at on Amazon.

Loved this game. Was super fun but way too short. I finished it in under a couple hours. :(

I tried to play this on a computer that meets all the requirements. I play games from another site (BFG) all the time with no issues but this game is not sold there. I bought from Amazon because I know the manufacturer, GameHouse, has terrible customer service. Well, guess what? There's a glitch in this game. Amazon tells you to talk to GameHouse and GameHouse refuses to support anything you don't buy directly from them, though I'm sure they're happy to take their cut of my money. I will NEVER buy another GameHouse game; their support is abysmal and every single one of their games has given me trouble before I could play it, something I hear frequently about them on BFG forum from other players. I expect more from Amazon. They gave me a refund but in my opinion they should not be selling products from manufacturers that refuse to support them. This is the first time I have ever been disappointed in Amazon. Let's hope it's the last.

Gorgeous artwork, riveting sound, shimmering ghosts, sudden in -the- face encounters. If you're like me you're gonna hold your breath and practically jump out of your skin as this excellent horror tale unfolds.
It all begins with a group of teen aged girls telling ghost stories around a campfire. The girls, nicely drawn and with considerable personality, are discussing two friends who barely escaped from a serial killer with a hook for a hand. The Hookman rides again in this dark tale as a young couple, Christine and Patrick, plan to spend a peaceful weekend in a cabin in the woods and are instead engulfed in a night of suspense and bone-chilling fear of some unknown presence there in the woods with them. Their cabin has been ransacked, their car gets a suspicious flat tire and the young couple is immersed immediately in a miasma of unknown danger. As usual, the girl does most of the work always present in a HOG and Christine is obliged to replace fuses, gather firewood, scare off a bobcat, frantically search for objects necessary to advance the game. Patrick at least changes the flat tire of their car and if you don't know the procedure of replacing a flat you will! And you've got to find the lug nuts in a box of every conceivable type of nut on the planet. All of the hidden objects directly relate to the plot and help to advance it and the meshing of the hidden stuff with the plot is perfect. There are no jarring episodes of having to run somewhere, chasing down something that has nothing to do with anything except being hidden. The mini-games are above average both as art and as puzzles. These are well integrated into the story and they are HARD. Complicated lock systems, slider puzzles, a broken decoder, a rusty punch card maker, a sabotaged radio, a telephone in several pieces, are waiting for your ingenuity. Repair them you must or you can't advance. To assay the hint mechanism you have to collect unlit fireflies which are placed in the scenes at random and rather sparsely. You cannot skip a mini-game unless you collect three fireflies. Hookman is classy. The only criticism I can make is that it's a bit short. But it's better to be short and sweet rather than long and boring. The second game in the series "Campfire Legends: The Babysitter" is also excellent and available as a download on Amazon. The Campfire Legends will be a trilogy, so a third game is in the works.

This was extremely fun!!! Deffinatly not for kids though who get nightmares easily. if you ge this game you MUST play it after dark by yourself. It actually freaked me out a bit and I don't scare easily.
The only reason I gave it a 4 star instead of a five was because I have a great computer system and on some parts the game would flicker badly. Not badly enough to hinder playing just enough to kinda irritate me. All in all though I would love to find more games like this. Two thumbs way up!!!

This game was not too hard, not too easy. Just the way I like them. A little creepy at times too. In general a nice, fun game.

Good game. Feels like the creators had been planning it to be several chapters long and decided they would just publish it. You can finish it in less than 2 hrs. for 1.99..Ok game. I wouldn't pay more for these" almost a real game" shorties.

This definitely wasn't the best game I've ever played...but definitely wasn't the worst. It was worth the price to download and play. It was visually appealing, which is big for me. It's a good "zone out" game if you're just looking for something to kill some time or escape for a little bit.

I really liked the game and that there seemed to be purpose for the things you were finding. The puzzles were worked into the storyline. I do wish it were longer, but it was enjoyable enough to play again in the future once I have forgotten some things.
It did work on my Windows 7. It froze once but was very early in the game and I restarted with no further problems. There is another Campfire Legends available as well. I have trouble with nausia in movement on games, but there was no risk of problems with that on this game. If you are not sure if it is for you, Amazon has a free download to try it out before buying. |
