5.0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise and easy to view, January 14, 2004
This review is from: Campfire Magic: How To build One Match Campfires (DVD)
This 38-minute DVD produced by and featuring outdoorsman Todd Allen (who reminds me a bit of the actor Sterling Hayden) is a fine primer on how to start and maintain a campfire. It is suitable for viewing by Boy Scout and Girl Scout groups (the kids will like Todd's relaxed and humourous approach) and indeed any tenderfoot campers. I wish I had viewed it some years ago when I attempted my first campfire. Oh, the mistakes I would have avoided!

Allen demonstrates what matches to use, how to protect the matches from the elements (e.g., a little chapstick on the tips and down the sides will allow the matches to get wet and still light), how to gather tinder and firewood, and how to split open wet branches to expose the dry insides during rainy weather. He emphasizes safety and a structured approach. The most fascinating part is how to collect different types of fuel, which he clearly delineates, and then how to stack the dry grasses, the twigs, and the branches to make the most effective fire. In effect he builds a drafty house of wood upon some logs. He also shows how to set up rocks to hold your cooking pot and even how to construct a tripod from which to dangle a pot over a fire.

He also demonstrates how to start fires using a magnesium fire starter, and how to build a "self-feeding" fire. He does NOT however demonstrate how to start a fire by rubbing two sticks together or by twirling a stick into a piece of wood! I was waiting for that, Todd. Maybe in your next DVD!

Allen uses humor and some pleasant music and some outdoor shots of animals and (presumably) the west Texas brush country to augment the production. He has an engaging personality and is a natural teacher.

Bottom line: I've heard it said that in the out-of-doors, "the bigger the fire the bigger the fool." Using Todd Allen's technique you'll build a fire that is not only the right size for the job, but something close to a work of art. So even if you have some experience in the outdoors you might want to view this DVD before going on your next camping trip.
