4.0 out of 5 stars Important step in Animal Collective's development
Though the initial pressing of this release was not credited to Animal Collective, it is actually the first album in their discography that the entire band plays on (as it's their first album to feature Deakin.) Now Animal Collective has reissued the album with their name appearing in the liner notes. This is probably Animal Collective's sparsest, most ethereal album...

3.0 out of 5 stars The only enjoyable Animal Collective album I have heard
Everyone tells me how great animal collective is and what a masterpiece "Feels" was. I went bought all their albums and everyone I heard was just un-listenable... total garbage. However, I do enjoy this album. I don't know how anyone could give it five stars because, like their past albums, it's really just a bunch of sounds strung together with very little structure...

4.0 out of 5 stars Important step in Animal Collective's development, February 7, 2010
This review is from: Campfire Songs (MP3 Download)
Though the initial pressing of this release was not credited to Animal Collective, it is actually the first album in their discography that the entire band plays on (as it's their first album to feature Deakin.) Now Animal Collective has reissued the album with their name appearing in the liner notes. This is probably Animal Collective's sparsest, most ethereal album. Though popular rumor is that this record is an improvisation, it's actually a very carefully composed performance captured in a very stripped down manner, everyone playing together live, recording to Geologist's mini-disc recorders on a screened in porch (in mid-November no less). It takes many listens for the structure of this record to reveal itself, and anyone who got into Animal Collective through their last few albums and EP's would do well to check out their album Sung Tongs and the Prospect Hummer EP with Vashti Bunyan to get a sense of this side of the band before looking into Campfire Songs. But for shameless fanboys such as myself who were just a little too late the first time around, this reissue is a must.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Animal Collective.... Need I Say More?, September 2, 2007
This review is from: Campfire Songs (Audio CD)
I mean seriously its a superflow of amazing musicianship from brooklyn's finest. Sit on a couch and put this in. You will feel the songs change your perception on the room you're in, it is that surreal-inducing. Beautifully natural and naturally beautiful.

3.0 out of 5 stars The only enjoyable Animal Collective album I have heard, January 26, 2010
This review is from: Campfire Songs (Audio CD)
Everyone tells me how great animal collective is and what a masterpiece "Feels" was. I went bought all their albums and everyone I heard was just un-listenable... total garbage. However, I do enjoy this album. I don't know how anyone could give it five stars because, like their past albums, it's really just a bunch of sounds strung together with very little structure. Yet, the things that sets this album apart is that I actually ENJOY the senseless sounds they have through this album. It really sets a mellow mood as I can put this album in, turn it up way loud and just let this completely non-obtrusive noise (I don't know if I'd call it music though) fill up my house and let it set an peaceful atmosphere. I love the light guitars and chanting vocals throughout the whole album and each song just bleeds into the next for a whole listening experience. I am glad I own this album and I would suggest it.

On another note: certain albums will always hold a specific memory of a time that I listening to them and they just memorably clicked at that moment. This album will always remind me of ZION NATIONAL PARK in southern Utah. I was driving down this winding mountain road through these amazing red rock mountains and I listened to this album all the way down. I will never forget how it couldn't have fit more perfectly with that beautiful scenery and whenever I listen to this album I picture that scenery.

2.0 out of 5 stars the weakest release by Animal Collective, June 2, 2009
This review is from: Campfire Songs (Audio CD)
i'm a big Animal Collective fan but for me this record is incredibly weak. so weak that i don't really understand why it was even released. buy Sung Tongs or Merriweather Post Pavilion instead!

5.0 out of 5 stars What purity would sound like if purity did not imply Absense, October 6, 2008

This review is from: Campfire Songs (Audio CD)
Campfire Songs is a monolith of organic songmanship.

This album makes me feel, in ways no other album has ever, or will, ever again.

Ambiance par excellance.

Words escape me. Such profound sadness, profoundly serene, as a storm rolls in and the children are sleeping.

Has a discernible effect on consciousness, if you give it the time and space it needs to work. Let it do its work. This is not some hedonistic romp through the land of light-brights and halogen lights. These sounds of heavy rain and waning moon, they make you feel mortal.
